Well sports fans, as if we didn't already figure this out, it was just announced that there will be NO NHL season this year.
Not since 1919, will there be no Playoffs.
This is the first major sport that will not have a Playoffs due to labor disputes.

Good, I am hoping for replacement players and the destruction of the NHLPA. I can't stand Bob Goodenow.

I have found plenty of hockey on TV. You have old NHL games, World juniors, college games, etc. You need DirecTV and the sports package, plus TiVo. :)

Yeah....Like I'm made out of Money. Christ, all my stuff is still back in Seattle. I just came out here with the basics. I'm lucky to have a small TV with me and BASIC Cable.
Thanks for lifting my spirits...my Friend.
Next time why don't you just give me a paper cut and pour Lemon Juice in it. :(

If you have a VCR, I'll send you game tapes. PM me your address. I believe I owe you, no?

Was doing some reading at one of my regular hockey news sites, www.tsn.ca/nhl, and realize that the Canadian teams are subject to different labor laws that make it harder to hire replacement players. F'ing socialists.

Is there anyone else on the board who plays, or at least has played, ice hockey?

C'mon Sdiver we all knew this was coming! :(
RL I agree, I too would like to see the league implode and go back to the basics. Fire that rat bastard Bettman, reinstitute the taditional conference and division names, drop small market teams (no more Blue Jackets, Predators, Thrashers.et al) open up the old style of play, realize that hockey is a smaller market that will never be more than it is...a Northeast and West US/Canada sport. Oh and stop breaking up the fights! It's a part of the game dammit! :lifter

Belive it or not....my VCR went T.U.
Gotta get a new one here soon.

Well yeah....we all knew that this was coming.....But I had to "Keep Hope Alive".
I agree, they need to get rid of all those "southern" teams. Florida (2), Columbus, Carolina, Tennessee, Dallas, and hell while they're at it, they can get rid of that silly team in L.A. (hell they haven't won a THING !!! ;) )

I agree with the comments about the game itself, but I like the league and hate the union. I have no problem with expansion or re-naming the divisions. If you want to expand the popularity of the sport, you need to make the game easier to follow. People understand "Eastern Conference" and "Atlantic Division" better than "Wales Conference" and "Patrick Division." Trophies named after people are OK, but not conferences and divisions.

I disagree. The traditions of the sport should not be devalued in an effort to make newcomers feel better about themselves. If they were truly interested in hockey then the names would be appealing just as would the rules and general pace of the game.
RL: I used to play. I was enchanted with the idea of a game invented by people crazy enough to think, 'Uhm, okay. Let's get a game where we have to get a puck into a net. Now, let's add big sticks, to hit it (and each other) with, and to top it all off, let's strap knives to our feet and do it on ice!' Crazy bastards. :)
I enjoy it. But I don't enjoy watching pro hockey. Semi-pro, sure. And certainly, hockey players tend to be less odious than their football and basketball-playing brethren. Unfortunately, hockey has always thought of itself as the fourth member of the 'big three' pro sports, and the revenues just haven't supported that. The sooner it realizes that it's a niche sport, and reorganizes itself accordingly, the sooner we'll have good, vibrant leagues again.

Played all through High School. Loved the sport, but spent more time in the penalty box than on the ice.

Yeah, I know. Some folks just don't have a sense of humor. I mean if they didn't want you to knock folks over the boards why the hell did they put them so low? Go figure!

So when you played, the Stanley Cup was just a shot glass then? :D

Actually when I played you were still a sparkle in you father's eye, head protectors had just been introduced, there were no such things as fiber glass sticks and friction tape was the order of the day to keep the blades of our sticks from splitting and give us that little extra ability to get off a good ripper of a slap shot and CCM made the best skates that didn't cost the GNP to buy. While we good enough to get others to pay for our ice time, we were a disciplined team that loved the game for the game and where not a bunch of sniveling, self-absorbed, whiney, over-paid, unshaven, drug-induced delinquents and, although we had a couple of kids from Canada, we all spoke English. Guess things have changed.

Last time Boston won a world series no Stanley cup was awarded then this year--the same.

The Court appoints Nous D. Doc as Special Master to investigate whether the facts support these allegations. This could be a capital offense for the Yankees (pun intended). LMAO
