It is beyond my limited comprehension how anyone - even the squibs - could sit around in a room and say "Attack Submarine Jimmy Carter, yea yea, that will strike fear in their hearts" - we'll name it that. My new definition of irony - the words attack and Jimmy Carter linked forever.

Whats next? The Barney Frank Recon Kill Tank? John Edwards Fighting Knives?

Navy to Commission Attack Submarine Jimmy Carter
Story Number: NNS050215-14
Release Date: 2/15/2005 7:01:00 PM

Special release from the U.S. Department of Defense

WASHINGTON (NNS) -- The Navy will commission its newest nuclear-powered attack submarine Jimmy Carter Feb. 19, during an 11 a.m. EST ceremony at Naval Submarine Base New London, Groton, Conn.

The attack submarine Jimmy Carter honors the 39th president of the United States.

President Carter is the only U.S. president to have qualified in submarines. He has distinguished himself by a lifetime of public service, and has long ties to the Navy and the submarine force. Carter graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1946, served as a commissioned officer aboard submarines, and served as commander-in-chief from 1977 to 1981. Carter's statesmanship, philanthropy and sense of humanity earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.

Retired Adm. Stansfield Turner, a classmate of the president who served in the Carter administration as the director of the Central Intelligence Agency, will deliver the ceremony's principal address. Rosalynn Carter is the sponsor for the ship named for her husband, with daughter Amy serving as matron of honor. In a time-honored Navy tradition, Rosalynn Carter will give the first order to "man our ship and bring her to life!"

Jimmy Carter is the third and final submarine of the Seawolf class. As the most advanced submarine in the class, Jimmy Carter will have built-in flexibility and an array of new warfighting features that will enable it to prevail in any scenario, against any threat – from beneath Arctic ice to shallow water. Differentiating Jimmy Carter from all other undersea vessels is its multimission platform (MMP), which includes a 100-foot hull extension to enhance payload capability. The MMP will enable Jimmy Carter to accommodate the advanced technology required to develop and test a new generation of weapons, sensors and undersea vehicles for naval special warfare, tactical surveillance and mine-warfare operations.

Capt. Robert D. Kelso, a native of Fayetteville, Tenn., will serve as Jimmy Carter’s first commanding officer, leading a crew of approximately 130 officers and sailors. Built by General Dynamics Electric Boat in Groton, Conn., the 12,130-ton Jimmy Carter is 453 feet in length, has a beam of 40 feet, and can operate at speeds exceeding 25 knots when submerged.

Well, if it doesn't inspire fear, at least the enemy will know that when USS Jimmy Carter is on station off of their coast that they "Just want to talk."

OR

At least the civies in enemy territory will know that anything that sub destroys will be rebuilt by her namesake.

Nah, how about...

She's been modified to fire the newest SLCM... the Tomahawk BS-Mod. The misslie is identical to its counterparts, only the warhead is filled with 1800lbs of bullshit, 150 lbs of glitter, and 50 pounds of perfume. A spokesman for the US Navy was quoted as saying "When the warhead detonates, everything in the target area gets covered in a shiney, pleasant smelling coating of bullshit. It doesn't really do anything, but it looks like it does."

And finally, in a related development, China announced today that they have completed construction of their "Rabbit Class" Submarines. These subs are specifically designed to defend against the USS Jimmy Carter...

-------------------------------
OK, I don't know how thrilled I'd be to be issued a USS Jimmy Carter ball cap and be required to wear it.

It was the Navy's payback to the Dems for naming the latest CVN the USS Ronald Reagan while he was still alive.

On the humor side, would you be more afraid of a nuclear carrier named after the Gipper, or an oddball attack sub named for the Peanut Head?

Looks like it's going to be spending a lot of time on the ocean floor.

...the U.S. has been reconfiguring the submarine USS Jimmy Carter for [fiber-optic tapping]," says Richelson. The Jimmy Carter, one of a new Seawolf class, is being extensively modified for a range of covert missions by the introduction of a new hull section, which will facilitate the use of remotely operated vehicles, surveillance equipment, and the transport of Navy Seals, the U.S. Navy's special operations warfare specialists. The sub is also being fitted with an advanced communications mast, which will allow it both to eavesdrop on radio signals and transmit information back to base.

The three ships in the class are the Seawolf, the Connecticut, and the Jimmy Carter, for all of the sense that makes.

Huey,

29 Seawolf class subs were originally planned, only three survived, thanks to Slick Willy (bill clinton).

Here’s a link that explains a little about the Seawolf:

29 is a lot of ships, especially with all the 688's still running around. 3 is a little on the low side, though. Even the 688i's are getting old now, the Akula II is much quieter than one. But there's not many of those around, which is good, unless the Chinese do end up buying some.

Sorry, I'm blabbling. Subs are a source of obession with me :o

My NRA Basic Pistol instructor is a retired Chief Torpedoman. Good guy, over the two days he told a lot of jokes about subs and other things.

Man, it takes a special breed to go down in those things for 6 to 9 months at a time.

An attack sub named for a graduate of Annapolis selected by Hyman Rickover himself to help build the sub fleet, who was also President of the United States.

Sounds good to me. Certainly more sensical than naming something for a tough talking actor who spent WW2 in Los Angeles.

Please elaborate on Mr. Carter's accomplishments as President.

As someone who served while he was POTUS, I can tell you that he and his cronies damn near killed the Armed Forces of this nation.

Other than rampant inflation, slashed military budgets, foreign policy that made us a laughingstock, international blunders, a massive buy-off of the Israelis and Arabs to quit fighting, giving away the Panama Canal, and a second (or was it third) gas crisis, what else did he do for us?

He would appear to me to be the living embodiment of the Peter Principle.

The boss will articulate the higher edumication side of things, and now for the Cromagnum opinion. I too served when he was POTUS and saw first hand how the military - especially Group, was torn apart. I have met him, and protected him several times during visits here. Each time I prepared by bringing a small bottle of anti-bacterial hand wash as his limp wristed, clammy, fishlike handshake, barely audible voice would make the hair go up on the back of my neck. So we can fire off his educational backround and political appointments all day long, but for me it comes down to a simple personal assessment. As I have been fortunate enough to work with, and call life long friends, men who's bravery leaves me humbled and in awe, I also know a pussy when I see one. Carter is a pussy. But what do I know?

Following the Japanese attack of Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, Lt. Reagan interrupted his acting career and on April 19, 1942, went on active duty. This was not achieved without some difficulty because when Lt. Reagan took his first physical exam, he was not accepted for active duty due to eyesight difficulties. His persistence finally triumphed and he was given another exam which he passed. However, he was classified for limited service only, which permanently denied to him his ambition of serving overseas. His first assignment was at the San Francisco Port of Embarkation, Fort Mason, Cal., as Liaison Officer of the Port and Transportation Office.

Carter downsized SF during his watch. Reagan built up SF.

I can't see a forum dedicated to SF thinking too highly of Carter.

So other than doing his job, where is the bravery here that you imply? Looks pretty simple to me.

I see no act here that would mark him as an outstanding Naval officer.

Well now that sort of brings up a short story about me and "getting together to hoist a beer". When I took over my second SF company the company had a cookout and the beer flowed real freely. I do not drink for many reasons, but those sort of distract from the tale. Anyway an ex-marine(if there is any such thing) and then currently an SF wpns SSG decided, as is most often the case, to sort of test the waters with the new guy. He found a short string hanging off my jungle fatiques, sauntered up to me with his buck knife (only because Bill Harsey's knives were available then) said excuse me sir, but you evidently are big into mountaineering as you have brought your climbing rope with you. He then asked permission to remove it, which I granted. Then to recognize him for his astuteness and obvious mountaineering expertise I asked him to take that rope over to the 4x4 post holding up the banister leading into the team room and tie me a bowline. Well in good spirit he actually tried to do it, but of course the "rope" was too short and SSG Townsend,my knife weilding NCO, came humbly back to see me and apologized for letting his mouth overload his ass and told me that he and his team wanted to have me drop over at the local hook and bullet for a beer. I told him that I would be glad to stop by but not to be offended, but that I didn't drink. Well that sort of floored him and he agreed to it. He did, however, get me to promise that I would have a drink with the troops when I turned over command in the future. Well, I had forgotten all about it and the day I changed command SGM Snider called the company together and directed ODA-221 to bring out the commander's stein. Well Ed Townsend (now an SFC) had the handles and Jay Graves held the bottom of this crew served beer stein and presented it to me with the reminder of my earlier promise. I didn't have to eat my words, but I sure as hell had to drink them. Fortunately Duke Snider made sure that everyone else got a shot out of this damn thing also otherwise I think I probably would had to crawl home. So councilor, if this gathering ever does come about not only are you welcome but my wife will surely welcome any adult supervision and legal council to keep my from overloading my ass with my mouth :D
