If you’re planning on ordering stuff online, get it done sooner rather than later.
Contract negotiations between the Teamsters and UPS are not looking good.

UPS moves about 6% of GDP, and represents about 25% of all parcel shipping in the US.
A strike is looking probable starting August 1st, and serious supply chain disruptions will occur should that happen.

Thanks for the heads up. Got an email from one of our pet med suppliers last week making sure we had sufficient meds just in case we needed to order something.

Shipping might continue as normal.
UPS and the Teamsters are resuming talks next week.

Last weekend, the union president altered his language from striking if there was no contract in place to striking if there was no tentative agreement in place.
Both UPS and the Teamsters benefited from the uncertainty created this month.

The Teamsters are getting publicity which they will use to attempt to organize Amazon and others.
The union president has repeatedly talked about using this contract as a springboard to go after Amazon.

UPS benefits from having more of its competitors unionized.
The company also benefited from a temporary drop in stock price, as they were doing stock buybacks (they also delayed earnings reports for a second time…).

The negotiators were subject to NDAs.
Hard to say how much of this was just theater.

The negotiators were subject to NDAs.
Hard to say how much of this was just theater.I suppose it's like negotiations between two heads of state. There is stuff they will agree to, and then there is stuff they have to rail about for "domestic" consumption by their constituency.

In the end, the winners will be the union bosses.

UPS and the Teamsters reached a tentative agreement.
The media campaign by the union and the stock buybacks done by the company strongly suggest that the last month was theater.

This was about unionizing Amazon.
Both the union and the company want that outcome.

If Amazon becomes union, other large employers may follow.
That could create a wage-price spiral.
