Have received notice that CPT Gilbert "Gil" Munoz died on February 9, 2005. Gil was serving with the 7th Special Forces Group at the time of his death.

CPT Munoz, or "Gil" as most of us referred to him, was a good and trusted friend. I met him early on during the SF Pipeline and essentially traveled the Q-Course with him. By a great coincidence, we ended-up in the same company for about six months during which time our friendship grew. He was our XO and, although new to SF, he performed his duty as if he was an "old hand". He made such a great impression on all of us that every detachment commander in the company wanted Gil to replace us when we left our particular detachments.

Gil married around this time, one year ago, to an incredible young lady. Shortly after that he trained up to take a detachment in our company. However, he was transfered to our sister company and was assigned to the HALO team. He easily completed the HALO Course as he was already practiced in sport parachuting. Gil was a consumate warrior. He was so dedicated to his job that he was the first guy in the team room and the last guy out. He conducted very challenging PT everyday, even if in the field. In fact, when in the CENTCOM AOR for a short stay, he took time out from a grueling schedule to visit the gym for a few hours a day. Upon returning, Gil easily spent 15 to 16 hour days getting his boys ready for the next mission. Gil was also the best shooter in his company winning the "Top Gun" award for his company during SFAUCC. He is a role model to me.

I will miss Gil. We will all miss him.

PRESS RELEASE: Special Forces officer dies of bacterial infection in N.C.

U.S. Army Special Operations Command Public Affairs Office

FORT BRAGG, N.C. (USASOC News Service, Feb. 10, 2005) — An Army Special Forces officer based here died of a bacterial infection Feb. 9 at a hospital in Fayetteville, N.C.

Capt. Gilbert A. Munoz, 29, a Special Forces detachment commander assigned to 3rd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne) here, was pronounced dead at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center at about 5:45 p.m. after he experienced systemic organ failure due to the infection.

Munoz was first admitted to Womack Army Medical Center here Feb. 7 after showing flu-like symptoms. He was transferred to CFVMC for dialysis treatment on the day of his death.

The cause of his illness is under investigation.

A native of Tucson, Ariz., Munoz was commissioned as an Army second lieutenant after graduating from the U.S. Air Force Academy in 1998 with a Bachelor of Science in Political Science.

Following a tour in Korea and a two-year stint with the 3rd U.S. Infantry (the Old Guard) at Fort Myer, Va., Munoz was selected for Special Forces training in mid-2002. In November 2002, he reported to the 1st Special Warfare Training Group (Airborne) here.

Upon completing his training as a Special Forces detachment commander, Munoz was assigned to the 7th SFG in October 2003.

Munoz’s military education includes the Special Forces Qualification Course, the U.S. Army Ranger Course, the Armor Officer Advanced Course, the Infantry Officer Basic Course and the Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicle Commander Course.

His awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, the Air Force Organization of Excellence Award, the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Korean Defense Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon, the Expert Infantryman Badge, the Air Assault Badge, the Parachutist Badge, the Military Free Fall Parachutist Badge, the Ranger Tab and the Special Forces Tab.

Munoz is survived by his wife, Emily.

Does anyone know the epidemilogy on his infection?

Obviously its under investigation and I don't want to comprimse that but I'm just wondering if it was a bad bug he got down range or not.
