On Veterans Day, this Vietnam vet wants others to know: ‘You are not alone’
Veteran's powerful message: ‘I consider it an honor to remember'

In 1967, he was sent by ship, the USS Walker, to Vietnam as an infantryman. The 3rd Squadron 17th Air Cavalry unit’s main effort was enemy search-and-destroy missions, plus convoy support, he said. He served in reconnaissance and infantry.

Specialist Fourth Class Pecci possessed such superb skills in weaponry as a young man that he was often assigned to solo missions on the ground in war zones, sometimes for days at a time, according to documents prepared for his nomination to the New York State Senate Veterans Hall of Fame in 2018.

Today, Pecci serves as commander of his local American Legion post, Admiral Farrugut Post 1195 in Hastings-on-Hudson.

After he returned from military service, he worked in food service, mail distribution and production for 38 years at The New York Times, from which he retired.

This guy is the real deal - the realest.

In fact, back when I was still serving undercover as a Special Forces Underwater Demolitions and Weapons Medical Specialist in the 4th Special Ranger Group, we did several solo missions together. We grew up in different neighborhoods together, we went to different high schools together, we served in different units together, and we went on one-man deep insertion solo operations together.

I'm not just talking routine deep cover black ops - I'm talking VANTABLACK ops - not this PowerPoint slide deck crap that most of you losers were doing in the 'Stan - I'm talking real deal, no shit, there I was, surrounded by used hand grenade pins and broken bayonet blades. This guy has been in the shit. He has seen the elephant.

This guy is at the top of the food chain.
In fact, he taught me everything I know about storytelling.

Let me tell you guys something - any time the military has an operation that can't fail, they call this guy in to train the troops.

He's the kind of guy that would drink a gallon of gasoline so he could piss in your campfire! You could drop this guy off at the Arctic Circle wearing a pair of bikini underwear, without his toothbrush, and tomorrow afternoon he's going to show up at your poolside with a million-dollar smile and fist full of pesos.

This guy's a professional, you got me?

Do you really think a guy running one-man black ops as an E-4 would be operating off of his real name? C'mon man.
You've got to be smarter than that.

Now, I could probably lose my GLG-20 access for telling you this - but I think I can trust you guys:

Richard Pecci is not his real name.

If you run the name "Richard Pecci" through a pseudorandom sequence generator seeded with the numbers "071515" and a nonzero value group length, you should not be surprised to learn that his real name is actually JAmes DErek HELMington...
...and you're worried about the access code for the Class VI facility

Dude - do you even operate?

Hollywood makes movies about men like us….

The ones that took the path of a common court jester only PRETEND to be men like us.
Then they end up negligently shooting their associates - or hanging themselves because their life is a facade - or they over dose on narcotics while trying to buy friends.
…or their SITCOM gets cancelled because it people get tired of the same old shtick

It’s easier to sleep at night when you are just pretending to be funny. Imagine all of those countless lost souls in Hollywood going to bed every night knowing that all they did was PRETEND to be a patriot. All they did was pretend to be a man or woman that honors country and friends more than the size of their instagram fan base. Sure - some of them do great things for mankind - most don’t.

Nope - I didn’t pick the wrong career. If I had - I’d have ever gotten to serve in the shadow of great men. I’d of only gotten to pretend that I did.
…I think they refer to that as being a poser

They weren't the ones featured in that Life magazine article I read a long, long time ago that may have inspired who knows how many.

You do, though, have a flair with the pen. It's appreciated.
