View Full Version : GEN Chuck Yeager dead at 97 on 7/12/2020
It's fitting in a way. He joined the Army after Dec. 7 as an aircraft mechanic, became a pilot, shot down tons of German aircraft including the first jet aircraft he ever saw. Then, oh, went on the break the sound barrier...with a broken rib. Taught the first Astronauts but couldn't be one himself because he didn't go to college.
Rest in Peace Chuck!
BTW, tell God that 2020 really sucks.

While a CO in cold war Germany pioneered use of emergency F-86 engine starts by using the exhaust of one to get the blades spinning up on the next one behind. Called 'em "blow jobs." Also chewed ass on his B-57 pilots in VN, telling 'em they got the big bucks and hot showers and good chow and they owed the troops on the ground that few minutes of concentration "down the slot" (on the bomb run) to put 'em on target where they were really needed - flak, or no flak.
His bio is full of lessons in moral decision making.

A true American hero, RIP General! Back in the 80's after The Right Stuff was released I wanted to try and get him as a speaker for our American Legion post's annual dinner. His home phone number at that time was listed in the directory and I called the number and his wife Glennis answered the phone, a wonderful lady. We had a nice conversation and she gave me the Generals regrets as he was a pretty busy guy, she has been gone now for 30 years they are together again. Godspeed.
Rest In Peace, Sir and thank you for your willingness to do what very few have done!

This was after The Right Stuff book was published in the '80s. How many Test Pilots from his era lived to 97? How many even made it to 50?
