View Full Version : Neck Gaiter vs N95 "type" Mask??
I have not escaped my condo for 60 days,, but being a good Boy-Scout, I try to be prepared..
I have tried N95 type masks, both commercial and homemade without success.
Problem Set:
very handsome facial hair
hat size 8, w/crewcut
2+ months growth
mask loops fly off when ears flap
Found a bunch of Neck Gaiters that seem like good candidates. Some with pockets for filters.
PS: New Nik-name by my G-Kids,, Chewie :]

This is a solution for an at home, low impact, non-confrontational VFOG.
Looks like a good solution! I have N95's I cannot breath with them (I'm also claustrophobic) so went with "regular" masks. I'm not thrilled about breathing in the air I just exhaled though.

I too have a huge melon...so I have been taking buttons and sewing them to my scrub caps for wear in the hospital or putting elating material BETWEEN the earloops and stretching the entire thing over my head - no touchy the ears.
The PPE requirements at the Trauma Center are R I D I C U L O U S despite only having FOUR cases in the entire hospital. eyeglasses PLUS goggles, N95 PLUS a cloth mask, head covering, 2 gowns, 2 pairs gloves, bootie covers.
The EMS guys around here followed our lead and have sewn buttons on their ball caps to hook the earlobes around. Everyone was getting some SERIOUS skin breakdown behind the ears...we still have it nose and cheeks - but the ear thing seems handled now.:lifter

Buttons make good sense, Thanks
I have seen several FB posts with "scrubbed" ears. Open surface wounds not so good

And they FREAKIN HURT. I have only been back to work for about 10 days....only took 3 to wear the skin down.
Stay healthy Brother

Give those grandkids a comb and some scissors and let them try their hand at apprenticeship as the house barber...... :D

They did at one time, but the results were always a tight crew-cut :D
If this Isolation goes on much longer,, I'll think about sourcing a Flow-Bee

My wife's been cutting my hair for over 30 years. I cut our son's until he joined the Army. His boss buzz cut his head before he headed to Basic. Saved a TON of money over the years. A standard Wahl clipper kit with multi length combs works just fine. Probably falls under, Be Prepared.

That’s really smart!
Yes, the back of my ears are getting raw. I can wear ball cap at work so time to improvise!
JJ, those N 95 only works as intended once you’re properly fitted...
n i can see that could be a challenge :D
Folks here who can wear gas mask w full beard can’t get good seal w n95

Smart! I saw a picture today of a nurse wearing a headband with buttons sewn on the sides above her ears. :lifter

Found this AM, but I had heard of some kid making these at home a week or so ago.
In this case, A sex toy to save your ears. :D
Coronavirus: The sex toy manufacturer making NHS gear
By Lora Jones Business reporter, BBC News
"Our 3D printer is usually making prototypes of sex toys, not things that could be helping the NHS on the frontline," says William Garland.
William and his co-founder Andrew Crichton set up CMG Leisure in 2013.
The firm typically produces up to 1,500 of its Doxy wand vibrators each week, sold on well-known websites such as Ann Summers or Lovehoney.
It's now also turning out 100 "ear savers" for key workers every day. The plastic product loops around the back of the head to relieve pressure on the ears caused by wearing face masks for long periods of time.
