The Inevitable Coronavirus Censorship Crisis is Here

As the Covid-19 crisis progresses, censorship programs advance, amid calls for China-style control of the Internet, Matt Taibbi, 17 hr

Earlier this week, Atlantic magazine – fast becoming the favored media outlet for self-styled intellectual elites of the Aspen Institute type – ran an in-depth article of the problems free speech pose to American society in the coronavirus era. The headline:

Internet Speech Will Never Go Back to Normal

In the debate over freedom versus control of the global network, China was largely correct, and the U.S. was wrong.

Authored by a pair of law professors from Harvard and the University of Arizona, Jack Goldsmith and Andrew Keane Woods, the piece argued that the American and Chinese approaches to monitoring the Internet were already not that dissimilar:

Constitutional and cultural differences mean that the private sector, rather than the federal and state governments, currently takes the lead in these practices… But the trend toward greater surveillance and speech control here, and toward the growing involvement of government, is undeniable and likely inexorable.

They went on to list all the reasons that, given that we’re already on an “inexorable” path to censorship, a Chinese-style system of speech control may not be such a bad thing. In fact, they argued, a benefit of the coronavirus was that it was waking us up to “how technical wizardry, data centralization, and private-public collaboration can do enormous public good.”

Perhaps, they posited, Americans could be moved to reconsider their “understanding” of the First and Fourth Amendments, as “the harms from digital speech” continue to grow, and “the social costs of a relatively open Internet multiply.”

So along those lines in today's Fayetteville Observer there was an article about the stores around town that were not "enforcing" the guidelines about social distancing. Almost to the point of shaming.

There was also a political cartoon showing a diner with a sign in the window that said, "Yes, We're Open.....Too Soon."

I hardly recognize parts of this country anymore.

Yep it's happening, bit by bit, step by step. I posted an opinion on FB similar to what I have said here regarding over-reaction to COVID19. One of my more liberal FB friends immediately jumped down my throat as being irresponsible for proffering a contrary opinion. Well I guess it's off to the Gulag and re-education for me!

Someone once said that the greatest threat to our liberties will come from our friends and neighbors in incremental steps, not from a large intervention by government. I'm afraid that is exactly what is happening.

My Mom informed me yesterday that Facebook banned one of her friends for a post on Corona Virus which was contrary to the MSM spin..

It's going to be a wild ride to November.

TJ - I think a Founders quote that aligns is the below from Madison (It's my signature line)

"There are more instances of the abridgment of freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachments of those in power than by violent and sudden usurpations"

I could be wrong - I had too much stuff going on at home but I am pretty sure there were folks skydiving this past weekend.
...and good on them.

Its too bad that no one will be brought to account for the level of shenanigans forced upon the global economy over the last few months.
Instead we have people reporting their neighbors to the police because apparently going outside is a crime now.

sad state of affairs

Well, well, well, It appears due to "sunshine laws" that neighbor you ratted on will now know you're the one who did it.

"....Jared Totsch, who shared the names on his Facebook page on April 16 after obtaining the list of 900 complainants from St. Louis County official under Missouri's Sunshine Law, said on his Facebook page that tipsters should have realized their information could be made public, according to a report in the newspaper Independent....."

I wonder if any on the list were supportive of releasing the names of people with a CC License?

This is why I've always raised my children to believe that character is defined by what one does when they think no one is watching/listening.

Don't choose an action for which you would be ashamed if it were broadcast to your family, friends and community.
