My son is going through qualification course, and is in his third week. After having heard how hard it was up to the point of one man, I am impressed. Over Christmas I worked out with him in the pool for one time, and came away quite surprised about it. Training isn't about swimming so much as it is about holding one's breath and trying not to panic. For all you combat divers, that is really impressive stuff, I commend you.

Free diving course will make that a breeze.
I went from a 30 second breath hold to a 3 minute breath hold in about 2 hours.
90% technique 10% just suckin it up

Our class had one medical washout. One of my OCS classmates found out he had extreme allergy reactions to Portaguise Man-o-war on an open ocean freedive.
He came up under the jellyfish and several of us were in the water watching. It hit him about 8ft from the service. He was very fortunate we grabbed him and had him in the boat in seconds. He didn't blackout but was effectively immobilized. He had some nasty tentacle marks on his neck around the jugular vain area.
The others that dropped from ocean fear and claustrophobia.
I didn't have a problem,, BUTT when we did the 1st lock-out from the sub at 60ft. it was in some ridiculous depth 3500ft?? an old gun range South-East of Key West. The water was crystal clear. It seemed like you were doing a HAHO jump at night from a bazillion ft. :D

Good luck to your son. I used to tell people in pre-scuba...you have to be too stupid to quit. It's all about overcoming fear and panic. Oh and recognizing that you're now in the food chain...and not at the top of it.
My son has already passed all the breath holding stuff, so is doing all the diving. There were guys who did 3 minute breath holds that didn't pass, so still must be a panicky feeling
What free diving course?
I always thought that a good free diving breath hold course should be the POI for Pre Scuba.
A breath of water is like no breath at all. Some lessons are harder taught than others.
