I would like to try this one

Looks like they resectioned an M-14, shortened gas cylinder, etc...what caliber is it?
I fired a shortened M-1, it was a blast put a bunch or rounds through it:

I like it, it would have the same feel as the M-1 I fired, with a 20 rd mag as opposed to an 8 rd clip:
Our company took M-14's to A-stan with us.

I remember the day I turned in my M-1 Garand in and was issued a brand new M-14, probably 1962:

I know this is apparent to you guys, but whats the benefit of the shortened barrel?

Just a well educated guess, contact in close quarters and for use inside of vehicles.

Makes sense to me:
I carried an M-14 in my B-model, the only weapon I was able to put behind the seat of my Cobra was a Car-15:

Come on Terry, you remember when they "Invented" gunpower!

Nice...pick on the old guy, right?:D
I also remember firing a water cooled .30 cal, AND I remember firing a BAR, I believe it had two rates of fire 350 and 550 rds per minute:

Ease of carry and manueverability.
FWIW, I do not think it is the trade. I have a Springfield Armory "Bush Rifle", essentially an M-1A with an 18" barrel, and the increased flash and blast are not worth the trade off.
The accurized M-14 is also somewhat fragile, and requires significant upper echelon maintenance.
The USMC version is the DMR, IIRC.

That's what makes it fun!
I was looking at it again and I'll bet the muzzle flash is impressive.

Would the "accurized M-14" be the similar to the M-24 I viewed in the 2/7th? arms room?

It would cover the M-14 NM, the M-21, and the M-25 or DMR variants.
The M-24 is a bolt action sniper weapon built on a Remington M-700 action. It is significantly more user maintainable and durable than the accurized M-14 series.

M21 is what I was referring to Sir. For some reason I continue to confuse the nomenclature for the two weapons.

Start pushing.
The improved blood flow should help your brain oxygenate and retain weapons nomenclature better.
Especially if you don't do real well on your testing, and we have to make an 18B out of you.

Everybody on an A Team is an 18 B until:
1) Somebody gets shot.
2) A bridge needs blowing up.
3) Its time to call CAS.

Especially in a civillian version ala Post Ban, no flash hider.
Although a 10" Barreled XM-177E2 (Car-15) with a Birdcage in place of the Can was truly awesome in the Muzzle Flash Department !!

Martin:
The SEALs love the 10.5" for CQB and shipboard action.
Can you imagine capping a mag off from that bad boy in a ship's hold with steel walls, floors, and ceiling?

With the "Noise Attenuator" on them, it quiets them down considerably compared to just a "Bird Cage" !! In fact the civilian versions carry 2 Tax Stamps because the Can lowers the Dbs enough to qualify as being a silencer.

On my team the 18E's did the CAS calls.
Unless of course you had a Q8 identifier as a Team Sergeant.:D

What do yoi fine folks think of the Troy Industries modified M1A?
Would it be a good weapon for what it was intended for?
Just curious,

It would work better then the Springfield shorty. We were looking at it and considering getting an example. The stock looks to be a screw on ala AI. I would hazard a guess at a machined metal skeleton stock under the outer stock. That would elimnate or decrease the problems that the M21 had. The rail system would allow mounting the UNS PEQ-2/4 and othe goodies. I Would look at it as a possilbe back up to the sniper, or as a hard hitting CQC weapon.
Look here for pics http://troyind.com/gallery.htm

I want one. They're all good.
We just got one of these in today. It hurts my ears just to think about the muzzle blast. It didn't really settle in just how small this thing is until I held one. It is an interesting rifle.
So, does the M1A SOCOM come with an armorer to keep it running? :D

This SOCOM 16 rifle is featured in the latest American Rifleman mag- for you fellow NRA members.
Also the Marine Corps' Special Operations Detachment 1 1911 Kimber .45 is in there too.

I hate to reactivate this thread, but I used the handy dandy search button before I asked and read what every said on it.
Since this thread was in 2004...my question is this.
Has anyone since gotten to shoot and evaulate this rifle? I ask because I have always like the Springfields but never got to try out this model. I good friend at work is wanting to sell his rifle and the price is right.
Any thoughts? :munchin

Yeah.
Firing it confirmed my suspicions.
Read through all of the posts on this thread again and tell me what advantage it has over the standard M-1A or M-14?
TR
Advantage #1. Excuse to take trip to toy store.
Advantage #2. Reason to get rid of that pesky and cumbersome disposable
income.
Advantage #3. Have your very own 50m personal shooting perimeter at your local civilian range.
:D
