"Maj. Gen. Sidney Shachnow survived three years in a Nazi concentration camp, he deployed twice to the jungles of Vietnam and he was the top U.S. Army officer in Berlin at the end of the Cold War.

Along the way, the general became a legendary Special Forces officer, revered by many in the close-knit community of Green Berets.

Maj. Gen. Shachnow, 83, who lived in Southern Pines with his wife, Arlene, died Friday. But his legacy, officials said, will live on.

Born in Lithuania in 1934, Maj. Gen. Shachnow faced oppression in his homeland and found his calling in the U.S. Army after immigrating to America in 1950......"

Rest In Peace Sir.

The few times I pulled staff duty at SWCS, Mrs. Shacknow (who everyone knew) would come into the building and ask, "Is Sidney here?"

He would tell the story about when he went to his retirement physical they asked him for his birth certificate and he had to explain his lack of documents due to the three years the Nazi's had him. He told them, "Let me open my shirt and show you all the grey hairs on my chest if you're not convinced I'm old enough." He said his wife perked up at this and told the doctors, "I'll get him to drop his trousers while he's at it so he can receive some disability too."

This fine man will be missed.

His career literally oozes from so many things on my bookshelf and his influence has certainly impacted so many SF Soldiers along the way.

General Sidney Shachnow may be in his final resting place but his journey in life will never be forgotten.

Slow salute held for ritual period of time. Good night Sir, your tour of duty is over. This time Taps is for you.

I hope his wife and family have found the comfort and courage needed to carry on.
