MICHAEL J. ADAMS Commander (ret.), U.S. Navy
Mike is a Partner at McGuireWoods. He previously served as Special Adviser to the Judge Advocate General for International and Operational Law and as Deputy Legal Counsel to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, where he advised Chairmen Dempsey and Dunford and the Joint Staff on matters of international and national security law affecting military operations, including the law of armed conflict and cyberspace, intelligence, special operations, maritime, and other U.S. Department of Defense activities and technologies. He is a graduate of Harvard Law School (LL.M), Georgetown University Law Center (J.D.), and the United States Naval Academy (B.S.).
Mike served as a line officer, engineer, and navigator aboard two U.S. warships before transitioning to the Judge Advocate General’s Corps and the practice of law. He has been assigned as legal counsel for U.S. Pacific Command, NATO’s International Security Assistance Force Joint Command, U.S. Forces – Afghanistan, Naval Special Warfare Development Group, Naval Legal Service Office Mid-Atlantic, and Joint Special Operations Task Forces conducting U.S. national missions abroad. He deployed on multiple occasions, including a Western Pacific deployment, six deployments to Afghanistan for Operation Enduring Freedom, and one deployment to Iraq for Operation Iraqi Freedom. He also surged forward in support of contingency operations to the Horn of Africa and the Indian Ocean, as well as to Central America. While a judge advocate, Mike parachuted into the maritime domain and served as the afloat legal advisor for successful hostage rescue operations executed under orders of the President of the United States.

Anyone have any background on this JAG "parachuting into a maritime domain" (is that a water jump?)

"...and served as the afloat legal advisor for successful hostage rescue operations executed under orders of the President of the United States. ..."

Sounds like he was stationed on a Navy Support Ship that was launching SEALs.

Nope - Mike is a buddy of mine and that little blurb is only a fraction of what can be told as to what he did. he's the real deal and a hell of a guy. Also one funny dude.

Glad to hear it.
It's well known that the quickest way for the SEAL's to get to the scene was to parachute into the water near the surface ships and get brought aboard.
But for them to bring along their JAG officer, who also entered the AO via parachute, that's different.
I'd like to hear the rest of the story, including whether he was already airborne qualified from his prior assignments or his Navy Academy days, or if he took a quick
jump course before the mission.
No need for PLF's if it's a water jump:)

Naw, Blue actually takes care of its folks that way - unlike some of our own units. There's a big practical reason to do things this way - think of the aftermath and a post-op handover to the FBI/DOJ; who is gonna do that? Burn an operator(s) or someone that can do it without burning future viability of an operator ?

Anything going into our justice system will rapidly turn into a shit-show and years and years of litigation. Easier to have the lawyer do it. I've been in some interesting situations but never got to HALO into what this cat did.
