Could that just be part of the patch itself? Like "Airborne" on the 18th Airborne Corps patch? In any event, that's a new one I've never seen.

It looks like a tab, with a ranger tab on top

The SFAB SSI has an Advisor tab and some are airborne tab'd

My guess is that he is a foreign student. And it's a good way for long range recognition before you tear into him for some minor uniform violation that he probably isn't aware of.

What is it'

The U.S. Army Security Assistance Training Management Organization (USASATMO) is a brigade-equivalent command, headquartered at Fort Bragg, N.C., employing more than 260 Soldiers, Department of Army civilians and contractors who are deployed to more than 20 countries throughout the year to meet the requirements of the foreign nations requesting training assistance.

USASATMO has successfully deployed training and advisory teams to every geographic combatant command, hence the motto "Training the world, one Soldier at a time."

The mission of USASATMO is to plan, form, prepare, deploy, sustain and redeploy CONUS-based Security Assistance Teams to execute OCONUS Security Assistance missions that support Army Security Assistance Enterprise missions.

What has the Army done'

Established in 1974, USASATMO began as a part of the John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center's United States Army Institute for Military Assistance. Eventually growing into a Field Operating Agency, USASATMO served as the Training and Doctrine Command's (TRADOC's) executive agent for matters relating to overseas security assistance training management and support.

On Oct. 9, a re-flagging/patching ceremony was held which transferred USASATMO from TRADOC to the Army Materiel Command as a subordinate command to the U.S. Army Security Assistance Command.

The United States Army Security Assistance Training Management Organization (usually referred to as simply "SATMO") is a U.S. Army TRADOC (Training and Doctrine Command) element specifically organized to deploy Army Security Assistance Training Teams (SATTs) OCONUS (outside of the continental United States) to support overseas SAO (Security Assistance Organization) training objectives. SATMO deploys a wide range of teams, specifically tailored to achieve the objectives set by the SAO. SATT deployment is an involved process with key responsibilities for the SAO. Inherent complexities of security assistance (SA), coupled with increasing resource constraints associated with the downsizing of the Army, make it important for the SAO to contact SATMO early in the planning phase and maintain contact through mission completion.

The organization is attached to the US Army John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School (USAJFKSWCS) for operational oversight, and administrative and logistical support.
