This is a rather lengthy read but I do enjoy the contrary view on the promised utopia of "Smart cities".... Which generally translates to a less-smart (dare I say stupid?) population.

(Excuse the source as The Atlantic generally leans leftist....)

The term “smart city” is interesting yet not important, because nobody defines it. “Smart” is a snazzy political label used by a modern alliance of leftist urbanites and tech industrialists. To deem yourself “smart” is to make the NIMBYites and market-force people look stupid.

Ret10Echo, much of this is also about information and control.

My experience with “Smart Meters” was not particularly great with both residential and commercial level applications.

I am not sure Muammar Gaddafi, Saddam Hussein, and Syria's Bashar al-Assad would agree on the "Smart Cities" assessment. tom kelly
