I think POTUS is doing a great job considering all the flak he gets and will give him a pass if he messes up now and then.

Now he is floating the parade idea which is fine, but I cannot imagine the cost of a decent military parade in DC.

i thing he is out of bounds on this one. I would just let the dippy little countries have theirs and the US can have little local parades which are nice and still would give us a sense of pride..

I do like to watch the goosestepping N Koreans do their thing though.

Love the military? Then don't torture the troops with the pain and absolute clown-show that such an event would be.

Been there done that during my time in Berlin.... It's NOT fun.

Instead of screwing over the troops just invite them to Mar-a-Lago for a weekend.

I have had friends from the 82d that have shared horror stories of All-American week. 15,000 paratroopers doing a division run, division review - I am willing to bet that just the threat of a yuge parade in DC has troops in the eighty-deuce quivering in their jump boots right about now.

I don't think the POTUS is a bad guy for floating the idea. A couple of four-day weekends or a paid vacation during spring break would be a much nicer way of praising the troops for their hard work and sacrifice. For fuck sake, we have gay pride parades, vagina hat protests, womens rally, immigrants rights, promise keepers, and even the 400,000 folks that participated in the million man march...
...and suddenly the POTUS is a bad guy because he wants to do what he thinks is something good for the military.

Why is this?

The American-Left cannot get enough of Emmanuel Macron's 'little-frenchman' in their collective mouths and this idea of a parade didn't happen until after Macron hosted the POTUS during the Bastille Day celebration and Macron just hosted another Bastille Day. Trump was 'inspired' by his visit with Macron and enjoyed the bastille Day ceremonies.
-So, liberals can be inspired by a self-proclaimed socialist, but when the POTUS is inspired by the same guy and now then wants to showcase the US military, the American left becomes apoplectic.

Why is that?

Call them what you will - but the French have been one of our dearest allies for the entire time we have been a nation. The French HELPED us win our freedom from England and even though we have our spats, they still maintain good relations with us. They have been celebrating Bastille Day like this for over a century.

A military parade through Washington DC might be a bit hokey and un-needed, but it hardly deserves all of the bad press.

Lets try a little experiment - lets get a celebrity to speak ill about the next LGBT, Vagina Hat, Sanctuary City, or Not-My-President parade and see how much support the same kind of disruptive shit gets...
...as far as those in the media referring to a military parade as something indicative of a third world dictatorship - those folks can eat fuck, and go shit themselves.

Our Soldiers. Sailors, Marines, and Airmen are not part of a third world dictatorship. Any talking head on TV that suggests otherwise should be tarred and feathered in the town square.

...but seriously, lets not have a parade, military parades are gay - and not in the new-age-liberal-chic kind of way - servicemembers don't need the hassle - they'd be a lot better off with some free tickets to a theme park.

A compromise maybe? How about a military operation into Washington DC....kind of like what the Democrats did only different, more overt.

Let's face it those involved with the coup aren't going to round up themselves.

Indeed - after all, the oath does have that little bit about obeying the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed above me - all enemies foreign and domestic, yada yada yada..........

That is probably what the Dems are afraid of.

Got this to say about parades - more fun to watch than to be in.

My only parade, not counting Basic graduation, would have been a change of command at Ft. Huachuca. We stood inspection in Class As, without nametags. After they squared up the ranks, "Left face. If you are taller than the man in front, move forward. Right face. If you are taller than the man in front, move forward." I was at the back with a hand full of other less-tall guys and we were culled from the herd.

After the parade group got on the trucks, the company clerk came along and told us that we were going to police up and rake the company area (it was just a resident company). He came along and ask us for our names (no nametags, remember) and told us to change into fatigues and report back in 20 minutes. As we were driving off to Tucson twenty-five minutes later, we noticed that the clerk was standing alone in an empty field. :D

That's the feign leak a big scary parade roster and route, as ddoering indicated there wouldn't be many rats in that ship. Pick them up at their mansions, secret meetings, and foundations... To make a statement have the National Guard do it on the Macron's visit, they gave us the Statue of Liberty. Now let's see that deck of cards :D

We used to call them "Dog and Pony shows". Somewhere along the way the Army realized they were preparing for more and more parades than actual training.
With starched khaki's that you could cut your finger on, and jump boots or jungles that shined so bright you needed sun glasses. That melted in the sun like a snickers candy bar.
We used to pass in review so many times we should have considered it a PT session.
The CSM didn't like it or the OIC said we still look like an accordion.
The parade was always on Friday and we had all week to "PREPARE "
I remember the time in Hawaii that we had been in the field for a week in the mountains in the rain and mud, so we came out of the field just in time for parade practice on Monday. As the entire 25th Division showed up on the parade field in most of our rain drenched and muddy field gear with vehicles, this one driver showed up with his bright and shiny jeep out doing all of the other drivers.
His Bn CSM went off on him hollering and screaming to be heard all over the Division parade field, because he had washed and cleaned his jeep perfectly, He had wiped it down with BABY OIL !

We had a parade in the summer of 1991 as part of the national victory celebration for the Gulf War. Prior to the parade there were also static displays of weapons and equipment on the National Mall for several days. It was quite popular and drew large crowds. I think there might have been a few protesters, but nothing of consequence. The biggest controversy was when the Harrier and various helicopters departed the Mall, they kicked up a cloud of rocks and pebbles that damaged some sculptures around some of the Smithsonian museums. They were mostly crappy modern art sculptures, so no big loss.

I know there was a 5th Group tent in the static display. Maybe someone here participated?

Parade? PARADE? PARADE? God I hated f'n parades!! One of the key reasons I much preferred deployment as far away from the flagpole as possible!

Understand the sentiment of the POTUS, but I feel sorry for those that got to participate in that clusterf'k.

Perhaps the 82nd Airborne could jump into DC, run over to 935 Pennsylvania Ave NW and arrest everyone there for crimes and misdemeanors. Then parade them all down to Andrews AFB to await their turn for extended vacation in Gitmo.

Then parade them all down to Edwards AFB...

That would be a hell of a parade across the country. May I suggest Andrews AFB? ;)

CSM Joe D (CSM of all Special Operations during Desert Storm) asked if I wanted to be in that parade............... I responded, "I'd rather take a month off to go fishing". He laughed and I went fishing. ;)
