View Full Version : Life Boat Test,, Whoops...
Testing a freefall lifeboat as used on big oil rigs.
The idea is to get out of Dodge FAST, before the rig blows up.

Needs some minor refinements in load management..
Where is the DZSO??
LMAO
Would make a great carnival ride.
Looking at the videos taken inside the pods, with getting in, getting belted in, and checking in, it seems that it would be as quick or quicker just to be lowered like the old days.

Most of the test use a 60ft tower. But the platform can be over 150 ft drop. Watch one test with riders at 60M.
I imagine the craft pilot loads and goes.

It would certainly be an E-Ticket ride from 150' if it included the backflip! :D
(Not sure the youngsters know what an E-Ticket is, though. ;))

I find myself explaining this too often.. :munchin
Thinking of this as a 20-low 30-year-old, Ok lets do this. At my present age, just watching that hurt by neck and back.

I think I still have a stack of A-tickets stashed somewhere. They did away with the separate tickets about the time our son was old enough to use them.

What are those?
Our son HATED Disneyland. He was 4.0 through Middle School and High School and almost every year the school sponsored a trip to DL for them. He never went. We took him once when he was 5 or 6. He spent so much time standing in line with his nose in some fat woman's butt that he begged us to never take him there again. :D Saved us a Caiman Islands bank account load of money, though. :lifter
The A-tickets are left over from my early years in LA with visiting friends and family.

Disney started Magic Bands a couple years ago. It's a fit-bit ticket tracking system. You can go to a kiosk and check which ride is low on traffic and "reserve" a spot in line.
Additionally, I am sure Disney is plotting everyone's movement in the park for flow to/from attractions, for better human traffic engineering.

If you look around, the riders sit facing to the rear and have 5+ point harnesses. This is a pic of a test model, I think.
Not going to be an "A ticket" ride, but it's preferable to the alternative. :munchin

Ha....Certainly looks like a "crash test" dummy. I guess you would have to be really secure the way that boat flipped when it was dropped. I wonder what the time period would have to be if you had to abandon the oil rig, jump in this life boat, and secure the 5 straps? Still, a wild ride for sure....:D

I'm thinking the real test is to launch this bad boy off a ship in the Antarctic Sea onto a sheet of ice and see how well it performs.
Actually a pretty cool design. I watched a youtube video and at least the specific design that was featured took into account the angle of impact and the path of the boat as it entered the water. This led them to each row of seats in the interior having a different angle of pitch.
