A surge in violent crime involving guns and knives has led to a 13 per cent rise in the number of crimes logged by police in England and Wales during the past year, official figures have shown.Knife crime increased by 26 per cent in the year to June — the highest level in six years — according to Office for National Statistics data published on Thursday. Offences with a firearm rose by 27 per cent, and incidences of theft increased by 11 per cent.
The underlying murder rate also increased by 8 per cent in the year to June, though the figure excludes deaths from the recent terror attacks in London and Manchester.After several years of falling crime rates, the latest figures continue a more-recent trend of growing year-on-year increases in the number of offences recorded by police forces across the country. There was a 5 per cent uplift in the year ending June 2015, and a 7 per cent increase in the year to June 2016. The changes have coincided with a reduction in police resources. Spending by the government in real terms on police has fallen by 17 per cent since 2010, and the number of officers has dropped by 14 per cent during the same period.
The figures challenge Theresa May’s assertions when she was home secretary that, despite budget cuts, police were managing to “do more with less”.
