Some US Airlines Outsource Maintenance to Central America

There's more outsourcing of jobs -- now it's the airlines industry.
The latest, preferred location for airline maintenance? El Salvador.

The Wall Street Journal reports at least two airlines -- Jet Blue and America West -- send their planes to El Salvador for "long distance" maintenance, outsourcing the work to cut costs.

Air safety experts are said be concerned that it jeopardizes safety and makes scrutiny by regulatory agencies more difficult.

What say you 7th Groupers? AM? GH?

Well, before the Airlines can send a ship anywhere for work several things have to happen.

#1 The Agency that is doing the work must have either an FAA Repair Station Certificate or a Like Certificate from an approved Foreign Government.

#2 The Agency must have an Approved Alcohol/Drug Program that uses certified testing facilities.

#3 The Air Carrier must perform routine audits of the Agency. Usually when you send a Bird out for a "Heavy Check", you station a team at that location to constantly monitor the work that is being done.

If the "Air Safety Experts" are concerned about a Foreign Repair Station, they need to start with the FAA and demand an explanation of why they certificated them or acceped the certification of the other government !!!

I would think that economic stability in El Salvador is a positive thing for the United States.

Do you think this is creating economic stability in El Salvador?
