Just for the hell of it:

Road Challenge: Transcontinental Road Race for Titles

Situation: There are ten contestants. You are all in Portland, ME. You’re going to leave Portland, ME in 3 days at 0600. Each contestant has $2,500 in cash.

Challenge: Buy a car and drive to the nearest bar in Imperial Beach, CA. The car must be purchased within 100 miles of Portland, ME. You have no credit cards/debit cards, AAA or any towing service, no spare or jack, no cell phone/GPS, etc, just the clothes on your back and a light jacket. (Firearms optional.) You can’t do anything illegal along the way (like get a ticket or kill the other contestants) and your max speed available is 70mph. If you pick up a hitchhiker you get an extra $200, but that person cannot help with driving. You can only pick up two hitchhikers. No one along the way is going to give you money, gas, food, shelter or anything of value besides encouragement. The price of gas is $2.50/gal throughout your trip. Motel rooms are $50/night.

The Good News: You don't have to pay any tolls!
The Bad News: No fair cheating.

Whoever gets there first wins.

Questions:
1. What car are you going to buy?
2. What are you going to do to the car before tomorrow morning?
3. What are you going to buy before you leave?
4. What is your ETA?
5. What are you most concerned about?

Good luck!

Details, details.

Kind of fails right there. As you well know car must be registered & insured......... purchasing from a car dealer might help but it would cut out purchasing from an individual and making the deadline.

Of course, all especially important problems with the problem, sir. Detail oversites indeed.

Let the situation and conditions be revised to show that violations of the law and procedures shall not be troubled with considerations such as vehicle registration or insurance, likewise private party purchases are not affected by probate clauses, leins, nor forged titles.

Enjoy the trip.

Easy, buy a cheap car for under $1,800 within the 100 mile limit, pick up two hitchhikers on the way back to Portland ME. Collect the $400. Sale the car at a local dealership next to the Greyhound bus station and buy a one-way ticket ($118) to San Diego CA to Imperial Beach CA. Buy some whiskey and a flask and sit back. I figure about five days.

There may be some missing details but can work those out on the fly.

Follow most of above (thanks ODNT) but instead of bus - get to PWM and book a SWA one-way flight from Portland to San Diego (<$500)...use pay phone or borrow phone from cutest available female at SAN - Uber out to closest bar - but - as required by rules...bribe Uber driver to let you "drive" the last 1/4 mile to meet "drive" to nearest bar in Imperial Beach criteria (SAN to Imperial Beach only about 15 miles) pay the Uber dude his fare and the bribe, combine with many drinks of choice and call the cutie at SAN to join you for drink @ http://www.thesaltyfrog.com

That'll shave a few days off trip...put 'em to good use. ;) having been to both Portland ME and Imperial Beach...I'll generally take Imperial Beach/SAN area for R&R.

ETA: 3 day Avis car rental out of SAN about $185 total for a decent ride. Might want to skip the Uber dude - drive to door as required.

But the rule says you can’t drive faster than 70mph. I suppose that rule overrides posted speed limits that are faster; like 85 in Texas.

I'm just driving from SAN to Imperial Beach - should be able to keep it under 70. :p

"Buy a car and drive to the nearest bar in Imperial Beach, CA."

Done and done. :D

ROFLMAO!!

One of the greatest delights about the fellowship on this site is that you're dealing with warriors who have learned that any problem can be solved once it is reduced to its lowest common requirement.

Drill Instructor: "Private, you are surrounded by the enemy. What are you going to do?"
Private: "Kill 'em, sir."
