The Latest: American accused in Zimbabwe to stay in jail

HARARE, Zimbabwe – The Latest on American woman accused of subversion in Zimbabwe (all times local):

3:20 p.m.

An American woman charged with subversion in Zimbabwe for allegedly insulting the president will remain in police custody this weekend after appearing in court for the first time.

Martha O'Donovan is accused of calling 93-year-old President Robert Mugabe a "sick man" in a Twitter post that included a photo illustration of Mugabe with a catheter. She denies the allegations as "baseless and malicious."

The court on Saturday dismissed a request by O'Donovan's lawyers to strike down the subversion charge, arguing that police didn't inform her of it when she was arrested Friday morning.

Lawyer Rose Hanzi says they will approach the High Court for bail on Monday. O'Donovan also is charged with undermining or insulting the authority of the president.

An American woman charged with subversion in Zimbabwe for allegedly insulting the president on Twitter has appeared in court.

A lawyer for 25-year-old Martha O'Donovan, Rose Hanzi, told the court on Saturday that the arrest was illegal because police did not explain the reasons for it when O'Donovan was taken from her home Friday morning. The arresting officer is being questioned in court.

O'Donovan is accused of calling 93-year-old President Robert Mugabe a "sick man" in a Twitter post that included a photo illustration of the president with a catheter.

The charge of subversion carries up to 20 years in prison.

O'Donovan has denied the allegations as "baseless and malicious."

It was the first arrest since Mugabe last month appointed a cybersecurity minister, criticized by activists as targeting social media.

After seizing state TV, an army spokesman announced it was targeting people close to Mr Mugabe.

Subsequently Mugabe ousted his number 2 and attempted to set up his wife whom the army could not tolerate. So, I told them, they decided to adjust the situation.

We had a good laugh when the army denies it’s a “Coup” but instead uses the term “Bloodless Correction”.

Just because Mugabe is out, it does not mean that whoever replaces him is any better. There is not one country in Africa that has improved itself after Colonial rule. Majority rule has meant a long slide downwards in every measure of human progress. There is absolutely no reason why Zimbabwe will buck this trend.
Thre will be a brief upswing while the west pumps money into the country to try to give it a fresh start, but the old habits of theft and confiscation of assets will resurface and the country will continue its downward slide.
The journey has no end until the people come up with a jolt as they crash into the back of the cave wall.
The new government will beg whites to come back. They will give the farms back to the original white owners, but only the stupid or desperate will return because they know that as soon as it is all prosperous again, the politics of black envy will kick in again and they will steal it all back again.

Considering Mugabe's ZANLA was directly supported by China and won, and the naive west and the Soviet Union's ZIPRA lost, I'd be thinking what happens in Beijing would be more relevant in Harare than what happens in Washington DC.

I heard from a couple Rhodesian/Zimbabweans that a big chunk of Zim's fertile land is run by Chinese outfits.

Maybe the next generation of "war veterans" who were born after the war will go after Chinese economic targets since the white and western interests are largely gone or already confiscated.

I think the biggest difference between western and eastern colonialism is eastern colonialism from China results in very large numbers of Chinese on the ground permanently, particularly in Africa.

I’ve seen what can happen in the South West Pacific when the locals get angry enough(rightly or wrongly) at the Chinese community, they burn it to the ground. My first deployment a decade+ ago was to deal with the consequences of exactly that.

In the time of the "struggle" for majority rule, China has been deeply disappointed by Africa.
First came the TANZAM railway line that was built by the Chinese in the 70's to transport copper from Zambia to Dar es Salaam and bypass Rhodesia and South Africa which were the original countries of passage and export ports.
The line was never maintained and ran only for a few months before it fell into terminal disrepair. Meanwhile, the Zambians were nationalizing their copper mines and turning them into unproductive holes in the ground.
There were many other Chinese investments that went sour after that, so the Chinese stopped African investment unless they could use their own people to build and run the projects. They seem mainly involved in agriculture now on the presumption that they can cope with drought and pests themselves, but the locals cant break the lands.

Two weeks ago, Second in Command took a trip to china, comes back, and isolated the Presidential Compound.

If that know nothing woman could remove those that were responsible for the very "Revolution" that gave them the power they had, no promises for the future for them.'
