As some may know, I’ve had interaction with illegals immigrants from this region. While looking for info on this particular earthquake, this bit of information popped up.

This graphic presents the Teutonic Plate structure along the southern west coast of Mexico. The Cocos Plate movement is what cause the 8.0 earthquake in Oaxaca. The Oaxaca region is in the American trench and is a very active region. The American trench connects to the North American plate, the western side of the North American Plate, stretches from Oaxaca to Alaska.

This graphic illustrates this precisely: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cocos_Plate#/media/File:CocosPlate.png

This article predicts a major earthquake in California by 04/2018:

News verison:

“Monday, November 2, 2015, 10:20 - Experts at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, Calif., predict there’s a 99.9 per cent chance that a 5.0-magnitude quake will strike Los Angeles by April 2018”.

The USGA disagrees with the paper claiming only an 85% chance….if there's an 85 % chance of rain, an umbrella would be a good thing to have.

A 5.0 quake in SOCAL is rather common and a safe bet. It will get your attention and make a little noise, but not much else (depending on the depth).

Here's a list of damaging quakes in CA: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_earthquakes_in_California

While there is one 4.9 listed in 1920, it had a Mercalli rating of VIII which corresponds with Richter Scale quakes up around 6.0.
