As of May 2nd, they have trekked 280 miles, headed North and collected 11.3K USD..

Ruck Monkey Team, as far:

J Mike Rogers
Johnny Mullen
Joe Impaglia
Chris Loftis
Rick Upton

Stan More
Will Melton

The trekkers join for what every amount of walk they can. So, it's kinda of a rotating team ruck. There is also a support group that meets at designated FOB's.

Just dropping this little factoid here: The elevation gain/loss of hiking the entire Appalachian Trail is the equivalent of climbing Mount Everest 16 times.

Cool.

I hiked a very small section of the AT in the NC Mountains. It ain't easy. A tip of the beret to them.

The small portion of the AT that I did near Dahlonega (twice) was enough to permanently cure me of any latent "I want to thru hike the AT" disease.

Shout out to Pineland Locals..

Omar Carcamo‎
Come on brothers. We are in the heart of PINELAND, and they require your help! We are over 280 miles into this as highlighted in tennis ball yellow. FOB support is needed and three legs are open on the Southbound trail. Spread the word. Get a buddy to walk with you.

Saturday AM update..

The FOG's are trekking...

Random comments from Stan & Mike...

PS: There are and will be add-on hikers. A combination of family, friends, and a couple tag-a-longs that are doing the trail..

Northbound team is moving today over Round Bald, Jane Bald, Yellow Mountain, and Hump Mountain.

The SPOT is moving down the trail. Change of personnel. J Mike Rogers and Rick Upton are hiking today.

Is about 14 miles across high terrain to US 19E near Elk Park, NC.

Johnny Mullen is at home waiting the birth of a Grandbaby!

This section has some rare open ridgelines. Photo below is Internet stock. Weather up there today is probably very cloudy, and about 40% chance of rain. Is sunny in Asheville but webcams show the top of Beech Mountain as being socked in.

We are near top of Big Hump Mtn...vis is 100 feet or less..winds 40 mph..driving drizzle..ankle deep mud on trail...4 hrs of daylight and 6 miles to go...but we glad to be here...

11 May 1630...Joe Impaglia walked into the Carvers Gap parking lot.. Joe contributed 125 miles getting on trail at Max Bald.

Mike Rogers and Rick Upton did a shakedown 5 mi in 5 mi out southbound to escort Joey the final few miles.

FOB Roan Mtn is in festive mode. Venison on the grill..accompanied by a excellent red..(Rick knows how to bring gifts to the FOB)

Tomorrow Mike and Rick bang out a 15 miler..getting ready for the return of Rusty G.

Life on the AT...misson continues.

UPDATE:

The guys are still humping. After a couple days off for the 4th, they packed up and jumped back on the trail.

To date, they have covered aprox 870 miles from the South and 450 miles from the North. (ref: MAP)

Thanks to generous contributions, the fund has also swelled to just over 24.5K USD, with an adjusted target of 50K. It started with a modest 10K target.

Always looking for help along the trail or some of you burly snake eaters to throw on a ruck and join the sweat trail..

From the North team:

VERMONT. Near the banks of the Connecticut River, the SF Regimental Flag and GB Foundation Flag are formally passed from Devin Plaskiewicz (far right) to Sean McNeal (center). Hiker on left is Joey Mancusi, son of Sean's boss. Sean will be on the trail quite a while, all the way down to Massachusetts. CM and DOL

From Stan Moore on the South team:

CYRIL
AAA 06JUL2017 1929
BBB KING MELTY
CCC CLEAR HOT WITH CHANCE OF THUNDERSTORMS.
DDD AT CALF MTN SHELTER FOR RON. HEADED TO BLACKROCK HUT TOMORROW FOR RON. SHELTER AREA IS CROWDED. HAVING FUN WITH SECTION HIKERS AND FELLOW HIKER TRASH. ALL IS WELL.

NOTE by Stan: King Melty is 869.6 miles from Springer Mtn.

If your interested, some factoids on the Appalachian Trail..

link: factoids (https://thetrek.co/appalachian-trail/21-fascinating-appalachian-trail-facts/)

2. It is the longest “hiking-only” footpath in the world.

It is also among the longest continuously marked trails. The AT is marked with approximately 165,000 2 x 6 inch white blazes along the trail guiding hikers all 2,186 miles. (c attached pics)

5. The elevation gain/loss of hiking the entire Appalachian Trail is the equivalent of climbing Mount Everest 16 times.

The summit of Mount Everest sits at 29,029 feet. Doing a little math that means that the elevation changes hikers traverse along the AT totals up to an approximate 464,464 feet!5

The AT is beautiful as well as challenging. I hiked a section in SMNP up to Clingman's Dome which is the highest point on the AT.

Thanks for the update and photos, I was wondering how they were getting along. Beautiful country up there....looks like someone had a little fun with the trail markers.

I didn't fully understand if the guys heading South were planning on completing the Trail ie the Southern part of WNC?

The South and North teams plan to meet at the MOHICAN OUTDOOR CENTER on or about Aug 17th. About 90 miles NW of NYC. I'll check, but I don't think the teams will continue on past the link-up..

The teams are composed of a rag tag bunch of SF'er. They jump in when available. No one guy will complete the 2200 miles treckke ..
