Army's Third-Arm Gun Mount Aims to Lessen Burden of Heavy Weapons
Stars and Stripes | 4 Apr 2017

Soldiers may one day be equipped with a mechanical third arm to lessen the burden of heavy weapons and free their hands for other tasks.

With the weight of firearms expected to increase with improving technology, the Army is testing out a body-worn gun mount as a possible solution, officials said in a statement.

The passive mechanical appendage, which looks like something out of an "Inspector Gadget" cartoon, is made of a carbon-fiber composite weighing less than 4 pounds and attaches to soldiers' protective vests.

"We're looking at a new way for the soldier to interface with the weapon," Zac Wingard, a mechanical engineer for the Army Research Laboratory's Weapons and Materials Research Directorate, told the Army News Service. "It is not a product; it is simply a way to study how far we can push the ballistic performance of future weapons without increasing soldier burden."

If a soldier is too fucking weak to wield their assigned weapon, what fucking genius thinks that giving them another four pounds to attach to the kit is going to make them any more lethal?

...I wonder how effective this fucktard invention works when using it from the prone or trying to conduct fire and maneuver?

I am just flummoxed that they are using an M4 replica to explain that the mount is for heavy weapons. Show me a homogametic 11B wielding a Ma-Deuce with that bracket and I'll be impressed.

For the love of Peter, Paul, and Nancy....

You have got to be kidding me....

How about lessen the weight of weapons rather than figure out a way to carry those that are thought to be "too heavy." Who gets to say they are too heavy?

I was 120 pounds carrying an M-60. It gets old hearing about how the military is trying to become "easier" for those who are deemed too weak to carry them rather than train them up to better themselves.

What is not to like about this? For the female infantry they can even have an attachable dildo to accessorize the system.

LOL, Ha...I did not catch this the first time I read your post....men always have to bring up the "sex toy" when it comes to us females; even if it involves weapons..... don't ya....Ha...too funny....:D But I do see the advantage.....Ha......

why would anyone think this is the military pandering to weaklings?

this is simply a developmental item that MIGHT be used to help homogametic troops that are unfairly born with a skeletal system that has cheated them from competing in the oppressive patriarchal hypermale society that has been forced upon them

Ah...yes..that has been forced upon them when volunteering for military service. ;)

I'd think a poncho liner that is a little longer would be way more useful.

I wish I knew. You should have seen the laughs when I got to my first unit. They asked if my mom knew I left home....:D

At 5'6" and 120 pounds, humping that beast was a treat. I learned to "trot" rather than walk in order to keep up. It did the trick.

It taught me how to become a master at improvising. That's why my sympathy meter for those that complain about things being too hard seem to aggravate me to my core! ;)

You, Sir, should be made SECDEF immediately as a meritorious promotion.

Ha, I started to watch the video, but I am at work and I have to "sneak peak" w/out sound....you never know who is standing behind you while you are sitting in a cubicle...:) I think in this case, I may need that "extra long Poncho liner" to hide what I am doing....LOL:p

Yeah, but how the hell are the engineers at the Army Research Lab going to spend a few billion dollars lengthening a poncho?

True, I've never put on a rucksack of gear along with a full weapons load and hiked many miles waiting to get shot, but even I can figure out that the easiest way to decrease fatigue of carrying a load is NOT ADDING MORE WEIGHT to the load.

I concur ...

I'm not certain what the extra long poncho ..liner.. is for...
I realize this goes against military protocol but ... COMFORT, so when it's time to tear into things you'll be coming from a good place.
Psssst, for four lbs you can get 22 L feet (110 sq ft / 15,840 cu in ) of some really good insulation... Perhaps even lean a heavy weapon on it in the prone?
