Orly airport: Man killed after seizing soldier's gun

A man has been shot dead after trying to seize a soldier's weapon at Orly airport in Paris, French officials say.

He was killed by the security forces in a shop after the attack in the airport's southern terminal.

The airport has been shut after what the authorities described as an extremely serious incident.

The man was on a watch-list of radicalised individuals and had been involved in a shooting hours earlier in the north of Paris, officials say.

The suspect in the earlier incident was stopped at a checkpoint and fired at police with a pellet gun before escaping in a car that was later found abandoned in the southern suburbs.

He is then believed to have used stolen another car that was found at Orly airport. The timing of the sequence of events fits, says the BBC's Hugh Schofield in Paris.

A convicted criminal with links to radical Islam has been shot dead at Paris Orly airport after trying to wrestle a soldier's gun from her and fleeing into a McDonald's.

Less than two hours earlier, a female police officer had been shot in the head in a northern Paris suburb during a routine stop-and-search operation.

His father and brother have been taken into custody.

Officials have confirmed that the shooting in Stains, where a gunman opened fire on three police officers, was carried out by the man who was later killed.

After the police shooting, the 39-year-old fled in a Renault Clio, which was later found abandonned 11 miles away on the other side of Paris.

He hijacked a woman's car at gunpoint, and this second car was later found parked at the airport.
Today's incidents come as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge visit Paris, where they have met with victims of terrorism.

The man killed at the airport had previously been jailed for drug trafficking and was radicalised in prison.
He has not been formally identified, but was a homeless French national on the run from the authorities, according to police sources.

France's anti-terrorism prosecutor has opened an investigation into the shootings.

I've seen some conflicting reports of whether or not the guy was on the "S" (watch) List.... More that he was known to police as a petty criminal as opposed to an extremist.

Reads like a suicide-by-cop scenario.
