They are known in the U.S. Border Patrol as "tunnel rats" - agents who go in clandestine passages that have proliferated on the U.S. - Mexico border over the past 20 years to smuggle drugs.

Any Vietnam Veteran tunnel rats here?

Thanks for this post Mojave. I had missed this in the news as dealing with work and a house refi have occupied all my time lately. It did bring back memories of the first narco tunnel they found and being there when it got taken down along with lots of nights crawling through storm drains/sewers looking for hairy legs attached to footprints or bundles of dope. Good times amigo, good times.

There was a lot of "tunnel ratting" that went on in Affi-land. No specialists, more of a "hey, you and you, go see what's in that hole..." Two best weapons for ratting was Thermal Scopes, and a portable shotgun microphone. Shotgun micro is (for the uninitiated) a UNIdirectional microphone. Had a small amp, and where you pointed it, got a 10 ft circle at 40 yds of sound pickup. Great in tunnels, could hear a guy breathing at the other end. And of course, weapon of choice. The fellas that ratted in Affi is a story yet to be written...
