The Nordic country mothballed compulsory military service in 2010, but military activity in the Baltic region has increased since, in the wake of Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014, prompting Sweden to step up military preparedness. ...."


Not enough people signing up. You can either increase pay or go the draft route.

This looks more like political theater for the Russians, with little actual impact. Sweden's population is just under 10 million, and the 15-25 year old age group comprises about 11.5% of that number. That means this so-called draft will affect 0.4% of Sweden's overall population, far less than the previous compulsory military service system Sweden had until 2010.

That said, this new policy will likely cause great angst among Sweden's Euro-smug, hipster, Gen Z crowd, and that provides me with a highly satisfying amount of Schadenfreude this morning.
