Some of them has been stuck in DEP for almost two years. Some of the applicants fell out of status while waiting and are about to get their contracts canceled because they've been staying in DEP for too long.
I also don't understand why MAVNIs are not eligible for a secret clearance for their first contract period even after passing SSBI, NIAC, Counter Intelligence interview and receiving US citizenship. The Army promised once MAVNIs passes the BCT they will be treated just as other soldiers.

my heart goes out for the future soldiers.
The news is very disheartening.
MAVNI has been a mixed bag at Bragg. Met one or two warriors. Saw many opportunists left service at first chance they got and pursued their engineering, medical, commercial goal. I hope they are all productive members of society, pay taxes, create jobs, etc. DOD lost $$$ big time in the money, time. and training spent on them.

The "bang" has NEVER been worth the buck. Exceptions are so rare as to be virtually non-existent. As a program, it should immediately be terminated with extreme prejudice. Quality individuals who want to serve will find other avenues and the Army will be better for it.

Concur with Peregrino.
Not a good ROI.

The worst part is some MAVNIs and their families are receiving death threats in their home country for enlisting in the US military and now, they are facing possible contract cancellation.
I think MAVNI in general is a mixed bag. There are a lot of highly motivated and well educated individuals who want to serve this country, and there are decent amount of opportunist who joined just for citizenship and has no love for this country. I was counting on this program for an opportunity to serve this country, and now after seeing these people I'm feeling that this program should probably be terminated. Personally I think Army need to stop advertising this program as a "short-cut to citizenship and pathway to benefits" as if it's an immigration program, and put more restriction on MOSs if this program reopens this year. Most if not all good quality MAVNIs joined combat arms(mostly infantry). Navy's MAVNI is a good example.

That's exactly what they are doing right now. The program has been suspended and is under review. They took in way too much applicants. It was 3000 for FY 2015 and 5000 for FY 2016. Way more than they can handle. They kicked my language off the eligible language list, but I'm self-learning Portuguese which is eligible. If I can make it OPI 2/2 I still have a shot, but I wouldn't be surprised if this program gets canceled. I'll just need to figure out a way to get a green card so I can join the Army. But for those from places like Afghanistan and are facing contract cancellation, I don't know what they're going to do and what I can do to help.
What an incredible opportunity to infiltrate the Army, get a clearance and gain access. Now if only China would offer us the same opportunity.

I understand your worry, but all MAVNIs undergo and have favorable result from SSBI investigation which is used for TS clearance, and all MAVNIs would be under continuous monitor for their first eight years in the military.

I don' know the MDMP leading to MAVNI protocol, but I wish it was like the French Foreign Legion. Serve faithfully for 5 years THEN you got a shot at citizenship.
Handing it out right after basic/AIT or contract signing attracted the undesirable types who doomed the program.
Oh well, hindsight 20/20
*yes, there are plenty deserter in FFL, but no benefits given there...other than meal and lodging in jail!

I used to do SSBIs for a living and no...the system is broken...but your profile is interesting.
