I think he might have given my wife and I a tour at the ASOM once.

A man police believe murdered an 86-year-old Army veteran was captured in Miami on Wednesday evening, a Fayetteville Police Department news release said.

Jameel Malik Davidson, 21, is charged with killing his neighbor Gerald "Jerry" Gillespie on Jan. 18.

Davidson, of the first block of Briar Circle, was arrested by the U.S. Marshals Service about 8 p.m., the release said. He is charged with first-degree murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon.

Davidson will remain in the custody of the marshals until he faces an extradition hearing. At that hearing, he will be given a bail, Fayetteville Police Lt. Todd Joyce said.

Gillespie also lived on Briar Circle. He served 22 years in the Army, according to an Army spokesman. He served with the 82nd Airborne Division's 307th Brigade Engineer Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team in 1953 and the 5th Special Forces unit during a tour in Vietnam.

Gillespie's daughter-in-law found his body Jan. 18, a probable cause affidavit said. Officers at the scene found two pools of blood in separate locations in the apartment. Marks were also found in the apartment that appeared to be made from someone dragging Gillespie's body.

The affidavit said police seized a white pickup, a cellphone, a laptop, a knife and a pair of gloves from the scene.

Gillespie's family was shocked by the homicide investigation.

"My dad had no enemies whatsoever," Gillespie's son said in an interview last week. "It does not make sense at all."

Joyce said the department is not releasing the manner of Gillespie's death or what was stolen from him during the robbery. The murder remains under investigation by police.

Anyone with information regarding the case is asked to contact detective J. Littlejohn at 818-3468 or Crimestoppers at 483-TIPS (8477).
