Federal Flite Control Shotgun Shells

I have recently heard great things about Federal Flite Control shotgun wads and wanted to try some of the buckshot out.

I bought a few boxes and took my Remington 870 with a Vang Comped Barrel and a Benelli M1 Super 90 with a Briley Comp Choke out to the range.

Twenty-five yard line was a good place to start, so we set up a pattern board and went to work.

The rule of thumb is that the expected spread for a shotgun is 1” per yard of distance, although some have claimed that the true figure is closer to 0.60” per yard. As always, the real answer depends n your shotgun, ammo, etc.

The Vang 870 put all nine pellets of the load into 11 inches. This was a little more than half the predicted spread, so I was happy with my purchase.

Just for giggles, I loaded the M1 Super 90 not expecting much in the way of improvement, and it stunned me with a 6.5” pattern of nine pellets at 25 yards, with a very even pattern.

Further testing remains to be done, but if you have not already tried the Federal Flite Control buckshot loads in your defensive shotgun, I would definitely buy a box and give it a try.

Thanks for posting that. I have been thinking I need to replace my HD shotgun ammo. (Just not enough bad guys breaking in to keep a fresh supply)

Question: brass or nickel case?

Witnessed. (Except for the source, I wouldn't have believed it otherwise.) Tells me I probably need to back up a few steps and test patterns with my shotguns (in spite of the PITA involved in doing it right). Anything to improve odds against low-percentage targets. I've already tried the #6s on steel at a 3-Gun match (grabbed a box because a mentor recommended shooting something better than the Walmart bulk box I currently use for everything). I was very impressed with the results against a spinner that wasn't moving for other shooters using lesser ammo.

High brass, though I doubt that the plating on the case head makes much difference.

Other fora recommend the #1 Buck in the Flite Control over the 00 for density and shot load, I may now buy some #1s and see how they shoot.

that stuff is legit. It made my non-modified 870 deliver all-accountable shots at ridiculous distances. I stopped testing at 50 yards.

The Flite control enabled me to deliver solid performance during a LEO shotgun instructor course. However, I found it more amazing that a Marine Corps security in the class delivered the same performance with cheapo buckshots using the Benelli M4. Not sure what is going on with the choke or barrel of the M4, but it also delivered one ragged hole grouping with slugs!

I patterned that ammo a few years ago in my Mossberg 590 (no choke) and it was a ragged hole out to 15 yards before it started to open up a little. At 25y , my results were very close to yours.

For social shotgunning, I highly recommend the 00B from Federal with Flite control. Seriously tight patterns past 25 yards. PFC154 is the product for the full power 2 3/4" shells. They have lower recoil offerings for LE and women with designated LE154.

In patterning, I found that the 3" shell (PFC157) with 12 pellets did not hold nearly as tight of a pattern past 15 yards.

All shots with 18.5" Mossberg 590.:

First is the federal flite-control with shots at 10 and 15 yards on the same target. The 15y is shifted left. All pellets and wad went through the same holes.
The other target is of green box Remington 00B at 15 yards and the shot is spread much farther.

The last picture is the PFC157 at 10y. If you want more of a spread, this may be your ticket.
