As the regulation season comes to a close, thought I'd see if anyone has thoughts about their favorite team (mine, since 1961, is apparent). It's always tough for some as they wait to see if some prima-donna Wild Card team gets lucky for a short stretch to knock off what was clearly - over 162 games - a team that dominated.
So who do you like for the playoffs and beyond? Expound on things according to Rawlings-Spalding-Wilson. Fly the colors!

I do ... I REALLY DO !!!!!Nice one. Truly deplorable. :D
I don't follow the AL too much because they play that other game (with 10 guys in a line-up). But it seems there is a similar situation in the AL as the NL had last year with 2 Wild Cards in the same division. The Texas Rangers will have to handle some runner-ups potentially ruining what's been a fine season for them. (There was much gnashing of teeth up here amongst Brewers fans when they let one of their anchor-stakes go to Texas - a syndrome of bleeding talent that Cubs fans over the years recognized all too well.)
But there is still the potential to have a Series running between the last 2 classic ball-parks remaining, if Boston can pull it off. As to who comes to Wrigley on Friday after the SF / NY game Wednesday - meh, I'll go do some PM.

Let's go CUBS!
A failing 100 year franchise. after being owned for decades by a liberal rag, only took 2 seasons to turn it around by a conservative family!
Imagine what like minded citizens could do for this country?
Baseball and politics, who would have thought?

Let's go CUBS!Ha, well said. Amazing what happens when there's a meritocracy in place. Sort of like having the masses attend diversity class in pink slippers, contrasted with letting some multi-talented Special folks be themselves & develop the situation as needed.
Hopefully the Cubs don't go the way of the 2012 Nationals....or play the Giants.

32885Goes right back to that non-meritocracy thing. 2 also rans get a shot at going right to the team that won 103 games.
But it is a more seasoned team now and they've seen the hoopla. I'd prefer they not play the Mets simply since hatred of the Mets is (or should be) in Cub DNA. Hope the Giants kick 'em to the curb in their own hood tomorrow night.

You're right of course; heck the Cubs did it to the Cardinals last year, another injustice of the structure. Bottom-line: It's baseball, and anything can happen. We'll get an indication tonight.

Anybody hereabouts a Dodgers or Nationals fan...?
I confess to being a Dodgers fan maybe 55-56 years ago; went to see them (and the Cubs) once, playing in the old LA Coliseum before Walter O'Malley had completed the new stadium with (as my Dad put it) a dearth of water fountains "so you have to drink his over-priced beer." What a place that was... till they put a partial wall up it was like a pitching wedge or soft 9-iron to straight-away left for a right-handed batter.

When he ages off the mound, he will likely end up at first base.

When he ages off the mound, he will likely end up at first base.Agree, he's simply an athlete. Cubs have Travis Wood who they've put on the mound, moved to left field for someone else's match-up, then moved him back onto the mound. (Last night he became first reliever since '24 to hit a HR in a playoff game.) He just flat wants to play baseball. These kinds of guys will be around awhile hopefully.

Interesting. Dodgers take 2 from the Nationals on the road; now Nationals have done the same in LA. And it's looking (unless the balls-out clawing & scratching begins soon) that SF will cause there to be a game 5 back in Wrigley. Kudos to the AL teams at least for tying things up in a bow so quickly.

Eerie in a way. The LA Dodgers are in a similar position the Cubs were in last year. Winning all the critical games away. Chicago and LA will meet again starting tomorrow at 1060 W. Addison. (Probably with everyone dressed for a football game 'cause the season runs so long; this business of baseball with Gore-Tex & Polar-fleece has to stop.)
Blue Jays and the Indians go at it starting tonight. Anyone have a team they're picking in the AL? It's got to be at least as inspiring as the current political scene.

Super happy. Joe Maddon seems to be a super guy. He's definitely got an approach I haven't seen before but it works. He always said, "just give me guys that can hit, I can teach you the rest." So he's got guys playing/learning other positions to leverage some versatility. And now they've got guys down in the minor leagues coming to their coach, "Hey, teach me another position." Seems I've heard of that approach working somewhere before...

Cubs will have to stay focused as they were tonight; Tribe has sufficient rest that the world is their oyster in terms of options. Fortunately we won't have to alter the rotation either - and we have a bench that can play that [silly] 10th guy when they're at Cleveland.

That is so true.
In a way, I was kinda hoping that it would be a Cubs v. Boston series.
The history of the two clubs in two venerable old ball parks and two GREAT players retiring from each club this year.

Interesting to see Kluber step up. I don't believe that was expected in an "Ace - vs - Ace" matchup. I was thinking it would be a small ball grind by both squads. Kluber was filthy. Miller loading them up created some great drama late in the game.
Game two and weather on the way into Cleveland. Hope they get it off without delays, etc. Both manager's came off the night very positive.

Game two and weather on the way into Cleveland. Hope they get it off without delays, etc. Both manager's came off the night very positive.Yeah, he was nasty. Quite often there's, even from a good pitcher, that 1 pitch during an at-bat where you either swing for the fence or wish you did; but won't see it again during that AB. He took no prisoners; many AB's there was never anything hittable. Monster stuff. Plus, Rick Sutcliffe's prediction back in May that this krap of Lester not throwing to 1st "will not stand up in the post-season." Not definitive of the game as a whole but that 1st inning was a momentum swinger for sure. Indians finally closed the deal on what the Dodgers had mulled around during the LCS.
Was delighted to see Schwarber back for the Cubs & in a good role for him as DH & that he hasn't lost his drive. 15 of their outs, though, were K's. Can't have that.
Enjoy all!

On to ChicagoConcur about Arrieta; he's one of those who demands alot of himself, but he's lost the mechanics of one of his pitches that is nasty that he had last year. Almost like a mojo you can't quite grasp; been working on it most of the year, still ain't there apparently. Probably installs a little niggling doubt that sits there. At least he battled out of it. Should continue to be a great series.

Kluber didn't do too well in the last series on a Game 1/4 rotation. I would like to see Francona insert Merritt or Salazar in this one with the series lead and it going back to Cleveland either way. Let Kluber bring home Game 5. Especially with Miller only having to throw 17 pitches last night, he will be ready for extended work if necessary tonight.

Top of 3rdHoly Cow. If you look up in the dictionary under "what it looks like when the better team outplays the other" there's a tape of this game. Several of the Cub bats swinging like they did when they first got to the majors. As Harry would say, shaking his head, "...boy, oh boy." Pitching... pitching.
<ouch> Congrats to the Indians and Terry Francona has sure managed what he's been left with this year. Hoping the Cubs can at least insure a return trip to Cleveland tomorrow night. One saving thought (although of no use now) is that the Cubs' management & Maddon have been saying for awhile that they're still a year ahead of where they ultimately thought to be with this team.

Chicago brings their Ace back tomorrow...but they have to create some offense that seems elusive. Rizzo had a good night as did a couple other of the older guys. The young studs seem to have let the emotion of the moment erase what they learned through 162.
I'm thinking that unless it's a hold for the win scenario tomorrow, we won't see Miller back, which would make the Cubs happy.

Cubs still need to work on not chasing pitches. Up until tonight, looking back over my scoring, the games they lost they took, maybe 6 walks total. The game they won they took 8. If they can't string hits together in a given inning that's what they need to keep doing.

Glad to see I'm not the only one that hates Joe Buck! But on the bright side at least we don't have to listen to Bob Costas! :D
Oh, my achin' gut - LMFAO.
Tell me that was photo-shopped or I missed it while filling my DEL GBF mug...

Yup, Pete actually wore that tie....
My local affiliate dropped the Fox coverage quickly after the game ended. Guess I missed that (if it happened).

Heartily concur. Really one of those "ain't over till..." games. Really nice they could give the fans (as well as David Ross) a Wrigleyville win. (Considering the wind early, that Cleveland homer was Kah-RUSHED!) Holy sweet spot.
Cubs still need to work on not chasing pitches. Up until tonight, looking back over my scoring, the games they lost they took, maybe 6 walks total. The game they won they took 8. If they can't string hits together in a given inning that's what they need to keep doing.
Back to Cleveland; heh, where the weather is forecast to be 10-15° warmer.
Great Series!
It will be interesting to see how the Cubbies start out on Tuesday night. Last night's game 5 had a "finale" feel to it at least from how the crowd and players were reacting. Maddon had to fire the FPF with his ace on the bump and bringing Chapman in for 8 outs in order to get to 6 (which is the name of the game).
Possible emotional let-down?

...in order to get to 6 (which is the name of the game). I suspect at this point either manager is fully prepared, if everyone else is a casualty, to fix bayonet & charge if that's what it will take.
As Francona mentioned in the interview referenced last night by Smoltz(?) there's no way this approach can be used during a regular 162 game season. In Civil War terms, "you will reduce and occupy the enemy positions at all hazards."
And ranting again about Fox' doing baseball, they shouldn't. MLB needs to re-allocate more games to ESPN - baseball isn't Fox' thing. They're not good at it; they cram commercials even to the point of missing coverage, they cutaway during their coverage for some pre-taped gloss piece, even in the middle of a critical at-bat as last night... Perhaps MLB should take a page from Augusta National's Masters demands to CBS or any other erstwhile broadcaster. You will be civil, you will have really knowledgeable hosts who love the game, you will not talk too much, you will provide minimum 50 minutes of coverage for each hour, etc. I already know that Buck either can't keep a scorecard (or whoever else is feeding him a poorly kept record). It's contagious; even Smoltz gets a touch of the blabber-fever sitting next to him & he's a fairly reticent guy.
And Joe, hairplugs or not, you ain't your Daddy and it ain't radio, so STFU.

SDiver, thanks man. I gotta print that off for the Chief of Staff - she will get a big kick out of it.

Trust me on this. If there is one team that can blow a lead in a championship game or series it's Cleveland.

Long ball? Did someone say Long ball??!! Cubbies had Tomlin's number early.
Dumpster fire by the 3rd inning. Let's see what Francona does with the bull pen in this particular situation.

The Mrs. & I were reflecting on the coming game 7 & how there has already been some really great ball played at times by both teams. Interesting match-up tomorrow night; we'll see if the Cub bats can keep it up. (Man, that Progressive Field has a whole lot of CF to get lost in; you could graze cattle out there if it wasn't for the warning track, lol.)

Congratulations to the Cubs.
It was refreshing to see two clubs out there playing the game with respect and without the "attitude" and arrogance that seems to be spreading in MLB.
A quality series. They seem few and far between lately.
Hopefully the neither club goes into fire-sale mode and can bring it back next year.
The Indians surprised me with taking it as deep as it went. A tip of the cap to Terri Francona for managing the players he had and not whining about injury, etc.

First, a very well-deserved congratulations to Terry Francona for being named the AL Manager of the Year. With the regular season the thing that counts for the award he still did a phenomenal job (in my objective opinion) managing the Indians to a position where they could take the Cubs to one of the most memorable 7-game nailbiting, TV-smashing, World Series ever.
Joe Maddon of the Cubs finished 2nd in balloting to Dave Roberts of the Dodgers, who probably had his hands full just dealing with the yo-yo status of Clayton Kershaw.
Also, Cubs Jason Heyward (RF) and Anthony Rizzo (1B) were both up for the Wilson Defensive Player of the Year award, which went to Rizz. I guess you have to climb a wall TWICE to get an out, not just once like Heyward. Rizz also spent alot of time keeping the rest of the infield's error-rate down.

And finishing up (before the rifle deer-opener) with congrats to Cubs 3rd baseman Kris Bryant for becoming the 4th person to ever get Rookie of the Year followed up with the League MVP (awarded yesterday). Cubs' Ben Zobrist was the Series MVP; infield or outfield, the guy Joe Maddon calls "my Swiss Army knife."
Lots of team would like to catch in a bottle what the Indians & Cubs had this year.
Now, off to the woods.

Pitchers and catchers report mid-February !!!!Sad to see one of their workhorse pitchers go via free-agency (Travis Wood) but his season was the best resume a guy can build. With a couple others picked up already & Schwarber healthy & lookin' good for the lead-off spot it'll be fun. If I was doin' that bourgeois snowbird thing I'd have a nice warm grassy spot on the hill picked out in Mesa.
I guess Chapman turned out to be not so tainted after all, since the Yankees signed him back to a huge$$$deal. All it really took was a team approach with a sense of family, he worked through his difficulties, knew where the lines were drawn, and delivered.
Ahh well, time to shove the driveway.
