Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump continued to insist Wednesday in a "Hannity" town hall with Fox News' SeanHannity that there will be "no amnesty" for illegal immigrants, but suggested that he would be willing to "work with them."
His remarks were the latest in a series of recent interviews where he has said he is considering softening a previous pledgemade at the onset of his campaign to deport 11 million illegal immigrants in the U.S. During a “Hannity” town hall on Tuesday, Trump said he was open to “softening” laws dealing with illegal immigrants.
On Wednesday, Trump told Hannity there would be "no citizenship" for those illegal immigrants.
"Let me go a step further* they'll pay back*taxes, they have to pay taxes, there's no amnesty, as such, there's no amnesty, butwe work with them," Trump said.
He also spoke of how hard it would be to deport people who have lived in the country for decades and raised a family.
"Now, everybody agrees we get the bad ones out," Trump said. "But when I go through and I meet thousands and thousands ofpeople on this subject, and I've had very strong people come up to me, really great, great people come up to me, and they'vesaid, 'Mr. Trump, I love you, but to take a person who's been here for 15 or 20 years and throw them and their family out, it's so tough, Mr. Trump,' I have it all the time! It's a very, very hard thing."
The Republican nominee then returned to one of his tougher stances by slamming sanctuary cities for "protecting criminals,"
where he claimed police are at the point "where they almost give up."
"It's so hard for the police to**if somebody is protected between the sanctuary city nonsense," Trump said. "We got to get rid ofthe sanctuary cities, we're protecting these people. We're protecting criminals. And the police, who are phenomenal people,they're at a point where they almost give up. They catch them, they have them, they know they did it and then they know nothingis going to happen. You know, ok, so if you're a killer and you're in this country, they go after you big league and it's tough. Ifyou're a killer and you're an illegal immigrant, the police don't know what to do."He added that he is expected to announce a decision on his stance regarding illegal immigration "very soon."
Trump is expected to unveil his new immigration policy next week during a speech in Phoenix, the Associated Press reported late
Wednesday.
Trump plans to speak at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Phoenix Aug. 31.
Arizona Republican Party Chairman Robert Graham confirmed the event to the AP, and that the speech would cover "policy."Two officials with knowledge of the Trump campaign's plans confirmed the topic was immigration to the AP. They weren't
authorized to speak on the record about campaign plans....

Yes I agree. He does have common sense.
Of course he is moving to the left. He has to walk back some of the statements that he originally made that were simply initial negotiating positions / political theater to play to the rabid right wing / single issue faction of the party.
Round up millions and put them in camps to load them into cargo ships and send them back to Mexico a la "Operation Wetback" ? Like Trump or Cruz or anyone elected president was ever going to make something like that happen.
We didn't create this problem overnight and it won't be fixed overnight.
Stop the problem from getting worse. AKA Build the Wall
Stop the incentives for illegals to come here - Tighten laws surrounding xfer of funds to mexico via Western Union etc. etc.
Start deporting crimminals.
Increase penalties for businesses that hire illegals / illegals that don't comply with some new registration rules set forth in a sensible path to citizenship.

So here in Philly the talk radio jockeys are bashing Trump for "flip flopping" on immigration. Ann Coulter is doing the same.
So I don't get it. If I opine on something and I get new information or someone that I trust shows me where I am wrong or misinformed (Shocking I know, but it has happened :D), or otherwise makes a cogent argument for an opposing position, am I to dig in my heals, become dogmatic? Or am I to be open minded, thoughtful, adaptable and reconsider my original position?
IMO, the latter is exactly what DT is doing and to you Never Trumpers isn't that what you want i.e. someone that listens and adjusts?
Personally, I don't like Trump...simply because I just don't like him. I never did...even before he entered the race.
With that said, everyone -- including himself -- knows he said things that he didn't truly mean or at least knew it was dealing with issues that he would never be able to do. He -- like everyone else -- made emotional statements that weren't popular or even reasonable. BUT, I will still give him the benefit of the doubt that he can change his thought processes. Is the change sincere OR political...we will never truly know, but, I have had opinions that have changed or made me question them after reading a single post on this forum.
So, I'll give him this one!

Trump has room to move to the center without really changing his major big ticket positions. (America First, Illegal immigration = Big Problem, etc.). A move to the center is really simply a shift in tactics not strategy.
IMHO, Even after he moves a little to the center (which EVERY President does to some extent and Republicans are "supposed" to do) he is still on balance FAR better than HRC. So does that now somehow alienate his base? No. Not as long as he keeps up with his major themes and hammers HRC on all her weaknesses WRT, serial lying, Clinton Foundation etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.
Does his move to the center and "softening" his rhetoric make him more "Presidential" and palatable to a segment that are on the fence about him? I think so. "Presidential" = willing to compromise, being "nicer" .
So I think this is a good move. As long as he continues his no holds-barred attacks on HRC....which provides red-meat for the right wing base and entertainment for the masses.

I think his move to the center is the absolute best decision he has made since entering the race. I think a lot of his base is comprised of anti-establishment people so I don't think he would lose them for anything that wasn't deemed so disgusting and repulsive that he would be shunned. That isn't going to happen.
He has said a lot of things that people agree with, but like many others, after saying it...they think they could have possible said the same thing without sounding a bad.
Many people that I know, were on the fence about him because he sounded too much like a "bully", but agreed with much of what he said. I think he will win them over by centralizing. We shall see.

It shouldn't be a shock. They all trade their stripes, happens every election cycle, even the almighty Ted Cruz is a tounge twisting shape shifter.

I never have like Trump either. But, from the beginning of his campaign I've told whoever would listen that I don't like that man, but I like what he is saying and if one of the better candidates wants to beat him then that person better start talking tough and sounding reasonable while doing it. Unfortunately, all of Trump's opponents were politicians who only knew how to play by the political rules. By the time they realized that Trump had changed the rules, it was too late.
That being said, I'd also be grudgingly voting for whichever of the other 15-16 people who may have beat Trump whether I agree with everything they said or not. Keeping HRC from finishing BO's work is more important than taking my marbles and going home because the R-candidate doesn't conform to my little mold.

You are correct and Scott Adams has analyzed this EXACTLY correct. Add to this the bombshell Julian Assange is sure to release before Debate #3 it's game over for HRC!
Oh, and btw the collateral damage are these dumbass talking heads, MSM types, and Establishment stooges that he has drawn out into the open. They will have no place to hide. Hear me George Will and Mr. Kristol you are toast! :D

What he is doing is classic Wharton negotiation tactic, framing a
Position to begin an alter as necessary, makes perfect sense.

He is listening to his new management team. Now he is sounding like he wants to win. We have to vote for him for one reason: The 2, maybe 3 Supreme Court Justices that will be appointed during the next 4 years. That is it. That is the only thing we need to remember.... When more Kagans and Sotomayors are put on the Supreme Court, don't come crying to me...

I think that's a fair statement.
Most politicians are egomaniacs.
Also... a politician gains "polish" and experience by being a politician for a long time and repeatedly running for election/re-election. I personally like inept and unpolished. That to me is better than a calculating experienced career politician. We don't need more of those right now.

This....I also recall Trump specifically mentioning Eisenhower when discussing how he could remove millions of illegals. That is important. He knows what he CAN do.
No matter what he says now, it is just to win.
