Thought I'd place a thread for any comments, noteworthy events that actually involve athletic pursuits (vice terrorism/urban bio-hazards).

Congrats this morning to young Virginia Thrasher (nice name) for taking the first medal & first Gold (by beating 2 CHICOM competitors) in the 10m Air Rifle.
Nice job young lady!

Now that the recalcitrant lawn has been mowed, bride informs me that USA men take Silver in Archery. Saw the final shots in replay; them darn ROKs were dumping their shafts in there where & when needed to get the job done. IIRC, their women's team is notoriously handy as well.

Bravo Zulu young lady!

While IMHOO 10m Air Rifle is far too removed from the original intent of the guy who invented a cartridge and a rifle vs. a ball and a bat (not to mention the $$$ involved is enough to afford Nemo Arms Omen + optics + rounds + range finder), achieving 60 successive perfect/near-perfect shots is purely skull-numbing!

FWIW, I tried out for the Air Rifle team in college. Did not make the cut:( (granted, this is before Master Rick coaching and Master Gene Econ's Sports Psychology mentoring). I then tried out for the NRA High Power team and started off with Expert classification score, and left with Master:lifter. Now Olympic Rapid Fire Pistol and Bullseye on the other hand ...:boohoo

Yup, first day, first medal, first Gold. (Yeah, the SJW's are busy ingesting their children right now.)

Also, congrats to Dana Vollmer for medaling again (100m Butterfly). Gold last time, Bronze this time. 'Course, even I couldn't do what she did which is to have a kid in between 2 Olympics.

Women's bike race was kind of a heartbreaker but those things really highlight who has the 'never quit' dialed up the most.

Has anybody been following Katie Ledecky for USA women's swimming? She has been smashing records like its no one's business and is simply INCREDIBLE!!! Today she had an awful start (in the 200m I believe) and STILL won convincingly.

What I admire most about her though is that she is clearly a very humble and gracious person who recognizes and prioritizes the most important things in her life such as her faith (she's a Catholic like me!), family, and patriotism (she has spoken in strong support of our military and supports numerous charities). We as a nation are very blessed to have her representing us in Rio!!! :lifter

This picture pretty much says it all, LOL :D

Yep...I told my wife that she needs to swim against Phelps for some competition. :D

I'm glad she is on our side! It's believed that she is set up to take five golds. I truly hope so!

His answer: "Stud." (one swimmer to another, that's a good thing)

Summer vs Winter Olympic Games --> traditionally seasonal type of sports, not necessarily the region. Try holding the winter games in Brasil's single ski area with its 30m of elevation difference no matter what time of year it is. ;)

Concur. Don't watch much television other than Cubs game when they're on and a documentary or two, and a few (too many, really) congressional hearings...

This has been an enjoyment with the CoS in the evenings. Lots of depth in these teams, even besting several who spend the majority of their time in the US training here. (Not familiar with our track & field posture.) Good thing the Russians have a Judo team, as even RT saw fit to do a fairly balanced story on Efimova and the hostility toward doping.

"I do think it's a victory for clean sport to show you can do it after competing clean all your life," (Gold medalist Lilly King)

I need to get some of those noise-cancelling headphones little Boomer Phelps has for when the sisters-in-law come over...

Tonight is the first time that the wife and I have watched the Olympics. Its been a good night to start watching. We were both very impressed with swimmer Maya Dirado's Gold medal effort. She sang the Star Spangled Banner as the National Anthem was played , the wife cried and the hair on my arms stood up.

Congrats to young Mr. Murphy for taking a Bronze in the 800m, his first Olympics, coming from way back. Think he still had some gas left and, had there been a little more distance he could've taken Silver. He'll learn more about when to begin moving in such a heavy field.

The Masai from Kenya took the Gold as he did in London. That guy's got serious pace.

Any of us with a few years behind us will remember Mark Spitz and his 7 gold medals from 44 years ago. This article contains a comparison of the two. There have been a few seconds trimmed off those 1972 times.

Told 'em yeah, that's what they said about Mark Spitz. They said, "who?" Told 'em to google it on their expensive-too-heavy-can't-keep-a-charge-thumb-magnet flat thing.

Congrats to the 3 US Women on their (first ever) USA sweep in the 100m Hurdles.

Interesting that the MSM has ignored her........as if I didn't know why.

Fans Blame Skimpy Coverage Of Shooter Kim Rhode's Olympic Record To Media Bias

She just became the first Olympic athlete, male or female, to medal in six consecutive summer Olympic Games, but most sports fans have never heard of U.S. skeet-shooter Kim Rhode. Conservatives say there’s a reason for that: She’s pro-Second Amendment. Not only that, she supports Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.

I just watched an interview with Maroulis. She said she always lacked self-confidence and her wrestling gave her that back. I would say it certainly did.

Well done, Ms. Maroulis. Well done, indeed!

She is very talented. There are others. Tashiya (sp?) Alo is another up and comer. Super talented. Natural Athlete.

With that said, women's wrestling has a ways to go in increasing participation worldwide before the competition pyramid is as steep as it is for the men. The Japanese jumped on the sport early and kick ass.

With very few distractors (Lotchegate - brought to the world by NBC and their otherwise horrible manipulation of broadcast) this was an outstanding Olympics!

Well done Rio, well done! Golf clap!

Too bad the media scared everyone away long before it all started. Zika!

Congratulations to all the athletes who participated, won medals or just competed. Thanks!

Badger52

Certainly had its moments which were given by the athletes themselves, as usual. The media stuff is largely chaff, the better of it when you have someone who's also competed doing a direct interview.

For those who count such things (which the Chief of Staff asked me to find), here's a location (https://www.google.com/search?q=2016+Olympic+medal+count&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8) for the top medal listings (the Norks even had a few).

Next: Tokyo; hope the surf's up in Sagani Bay.

The Rio Olympics was great. I miss it already. There were a lot of things said about how bad things were going to be, with some sources saying we would be watching a total disaster unfold in Rio. To me things looked on, or above par with other Olympiads. The USA had another great showing with an impressive medal count. I felt pride not only in what they did, but for being patriots by singing our National Anthem when it was played.

About the only wrinkle was Lotche showing the world we still have an ugly American to deal with. There may have been other similar happenings, but Lotche is ours and he should hang his head in shame. Shame not only for what he did, but for being the coward who ran, leaving his buddies to take all the heat for his behavior.

Very well said. I told my wife that I hated to see them end. The USA had one of its best olympics in a long time.

As to Lochte...I think the worst part -- to me -- was the cowardly way he ran away and still can't find it within himself to own up to what he did. He still claimes he can't remember what he did and still distances himself from a lot of it. Cowardly actions.

Getting out of Brazil was SMART not cowardly. This was a minor incident that got blown up out of proportio by Brazilian authorities already butt hurt by failures and other incidents. This was a great target of opportunity for them. Why did thatone swimmer have to pay a $10k extortion payment? I never did understand that.

Lothe, however left his buddies hanging by not making any statements to help them out. That's the biggest issue. IMO

I know what you mean by him being smart, but I still think he jumped ship, but that's just my opinion. I also think he was a pansy and left them hanging and on their own. It could have been handled differently if he had owned up to what he did. But, he didn't. Either way...he's already paying for it by losing endorsements and more will probably follow suit.

I think that they wrongfully broke down the latrine door at the gas station, and the armed security guard responded.

He likely saw an opportunity and shook-down the US athletes as a target of opportunity, possibly with the assistance of the local LEOs.

Lochte made up the story to keep from having to report that they were drunk (probably) and stupid (definitely), thinking he could avoid the bad publicity by making up a creative story about the shake-down.

Unfortunately for him, the Brazilians are currently hyper-sensitive to this, and made a big deal of it.

Through luck or planning, Lochte fled before the investigation was complete and avoided the backlash and additional extortion by the Brazilian government that fell on his teammates.

This act of stupidity did not reflect credibly on the US or the swimmers, but did not warrant the overreaction by the Brazilian authorities, particularly yanking the swimmers off the airplane and allegedly taking $10,000 from them.

That just made Brazil look more like a corrupt banana republic.

Just my .02, YMMV.

For the record (TTBOMK) no bathroom door was broken, no soap dispenser or mirror was broken (by them). If what I've read and heard they never entered the bathroom and pee'd in the alley where Lotche broke some flimsy metal sign off the back/side of the gas station. Probably falling down stupid drunk. It must have made some noise because otherwise why would someone care. The only care the station manager cared about was getting money from four stupid aMErican drunks who may have resembled Olympic athletes. And then they got stupid over $33 (or 1,000 pesos) "Never go full retard" when someone is pointing a gun at you demanding money and alls you got is your dick in your hand. "Whatever!" (Ryan Lotche)

Everything else that happened did happen. Only a crime didn't take place and the parties involved quickly rectified the situation.

The story his mother told the media never made sense. The story he told never made sense - the bravado and brazenness was unthinkable even for a drunk. The IOC and Brazilian police said there was never a robbery and the media NBC all to happy to make hay where a field did not exist choose to make hay because up until this point all their dire predictions hadn't materialized. They latched onto this story like Pit Bull latches onto a jugular!

The only person that got "robbed" is the swimmer who had to pay extortion money to get his passport back and leave the country.

For Lotche, the cost of this fabricated tale will be millions in sponsoring $$ but sure as I say he will not be invited to Tokyo in 2020...he will be there because he is now a ratings success far beyond drug test failures and doping.

People want to see the train wreck, and the media and the IOC will ensure it happens.
