Other than the explosion a little while ago at the stadium where the opening ceremonies will be held, and the Aussies having a laptop and team shirts stolen from the Olympic Village, all is quiet.
But when something happens, I figure we dump the reports in here. :munchin

But when something happens, I figure we dump the reports in here. :munchinGood idea; the way the IPB looks this'll "Trump" both convention threads in terms of actual incidents. It will be interesting to see whose outlets soft-peddle the real environment outside the camera lens, who makes that their only story, and who focuses on the athletic achievements. If I'm lucky maybe someone could slip Costas some local "tap" water... please, pretty please in the name of all that is holy & enjoying an evening's appreciation of what it's supposed to be.

Just days ahead of the Olympic Games the waterways of Rio de Janeiro are as filthy as ever, contaminated with raw human sewage teeming with dangerous viruses and bacteria, according to a 16-month-long study commissioned by The Associated Press.
Not only are some 1,400 athletes at risk of getting violently ill in water competitions, but the AP's tests indicate that tourists also face potentially serious health risks on the golden beaches of Ipanema and Copacabana.
The AP's survey of the aquatic Olympic and Paralympic venues has revealed consistent and dangerously high levels of viruses from the pollution, a major black eye on Rio's Olympic project that has set off alarm bells among sailors, rowers and open-water swimmers.
The first results of the study published over a year ago showed viral levels at up to 1.7 million times what would be considered worrisome in the United States or Europe. At those concentrations, swimmers and athletes who ingest just three teaspoons of water are almost certain to be infected with viruses that can cause stomach and respiratory illnesses and more rarely heart and brain inflammation — although whether they actually fall ill depends on a series of factors including the strength of the individual's immune system.
Since the AP released the initial results last July, athletes have been taking elaborate precautions to prevent illnesses that could potentially knock them out of the competition, including preventatively taking antibiotics, bleaching oars and donning plastic suits and gloves in a bid to limit contact with the water.
But antibiotics combat bacterial infections, not viruses. And the AP investigation found that infectious adenovirus readings — tested with cell cultures and verified with molecular biology protocols — turned up at nearly 90 percent of the test sites over 16 months of testing.
"That's a very, very, very high percentage," said Dr. Valerie Harwood, Chair of the Department of Integrative Biology at the University of South Florida. "Seeing that level of human pathogenic virus is pretty much unheard of in surface waters in the U.S. You would never, ever see these levels because we treat our waste water. You just would not see this."

Yeah, I'll be very happy if all the Olympians return home safely......but sadly I'm a realist.
IIRC, there has already been three Olympians robbed so far! I am sure that's just the beginning.

You might want to get a more credible source. There seams to be a lot of conflict with this report. (Toolbox, backpack) training exercise, real bomb, robot discharged etc etc. ....

I wonder if the diplomat was on PEDs like the team?

A few of the high speed fellas down this way have had a fair bit to do with training some Brazilian units(BOPE I believe) back in the day post service.
I've always been fascinated with Brazil's mix of mega city cosmopolitan mixed with the self governed mega ghetto/favelas.
It seems like a mix of Bladerunner, Judge Dredd, and Kilcullen's "Out of the Mountains".
As I understand it, Brazil's mega ghetto gangs are largely controlled from prison.
I wonder what leverage those gangs are putting on government and LE, and what leverage government and LE are putting on the gangs to "play nice" for the duration of the Olympics?
I hope the games go well, but I would not want my kids competing there.

Security concerns dog Games as Portugal minister robbed
Portugal's education minister was robbed at knifepoint on Saturday at the Olympic lake where rowing events are taking place, but escaped unharmed, authorities said.
Education Minister Tiago Brandao Rodrigues and an aide were walking near the event area when they were assaulted.
The assailant was quickly located by police at the lake, a few blocks away from Ipanema beach, and arrested. Rodrigues' belongings were returned to him.
It was the latest incident in a series of robberies that have hit visitors since the Olympics opened on Friday. Rio has dramatically lowered its crime levels in recent years, but there has been a spike in murders and assaults in recent months.
Authorities said that 85,000 soldiers and police patrolling streets for the Games - double the number of security officials in place during the London Games in 2012 - would keep Rio safe.
But even top security officials are not immune to attacks.
Brazil's Ministry of Justice confirmed that Felipe Seixas, coordinator of security for special events within the government's Secretariat for the Security of Large Events, was the target of an assault as he left the opening ceremony Friday.
Seixas, who was accompanied by two undercover police, was confronted by would-be robbers outside Maracana stadium.
One of the estimated five robbers, who were armed with knives and riding bicycles, was shot and killed by one of the undercover officers accompanying Seixas.
Meanwhile, authorities are still trying to determine how a rifle round ripped through the media tent at the venue hosting equestrian events and landed on the floor near a journalist.
It is not clear if the round came from the weapon of a soldier or was fired from a nearby slum.
Both security personnel and drug gangs in Rio are armed with the same high-caliber weapons that could have fired the projectile.
