No more guesses? Don't know or don't care, or both?

Brigada Antiteroristi (Antiterrorist Brigade) of the SRI, or Serviciul Român de Informatii (http://www.sri.ro/) (Romanian Intelligence Service). The SRI is the domestic intelligence and law enforcement agency, somewhat analogous to the FBI, but with fewer "regular" law enforcement responsibilities. It was established in 1990 when the infamous Securitate was broken up. Foreign intelligence is under the separate Serviciul de Informatii Externe (http://www.dci.ro/).

The CT unit was founded in December 1977 as the Unitatii Speciale de Lupta Antiteroristi, or Special Antiterrorist Fighting Unit, and later renamed the Brigada Antiteroristi.

The picture was from the National Day parade in Bucharest back in December 2004. A few more:

TSWell, you made the dogo one seem so easy. Besides, I don't know what you or others here know. For all I know, those particular vests are only used by Romanians, or at least that combo of gear and weapons is unique to the Brigada Antiteroristi. Or, for all I know, someone might have seen pictures from that parade and knew the answer without needing clues.

OK, if "it's a little tough with nothing but guns and uniforms with no patch's," how about guns and no uniforms? This one I suppose you'd know for certain only if you'd already seen the picture, but guesses could narrow it down:

What do we know or can we surmise so far?

It is Afghanistan and they are part of ISAF, as TS noted and as the right upper sleeve patch in the second picture shows.
They are, by their equipment and appearance, likely Westerners (they could be Turks, as Turkey is an ethnically diverse place, but they are not). The equipment also points toward SOF with a US connection (rather than, say, British, French or German-equipped).
They are SOF, though there is no way of telling to what branch of their country's service they belong. They could be army SOF, air commandos, or naval commandos (assuming they come from a country with a navy - is that a clue or a red herring?)
On their left upper sleeves are backings for two removable patches - one rectangular and one shield-shaped.
By the camera position and action, these are exercise shots, not operational.
The images are fairly large, in good a quality and lacking a watermark, so they are likely not from AP, Getty, Corbis or one of the other commercial news photo sites. There are other clues, but for now these will suffice. Based on the information above, how would approach this? Two avenues come to mind:

First, since these are exercise shots and likely not from a news agency, you could check ISAF or ISAF-related sites to see if these are in their photo galleries. Perhaps a special operations or QRF-type exercise. There are less than a half-dozen such sites (NATO, ISAF, Eurocorps, CENTCOM come to mind), plus national sites of participating countries, but if you don't already know the country, that doesn't help.

Second, note the missing patches. Many soldiers wear a rectangular patch on the upper sleeve with their national flag (Danes, Germans, British, Dutch, for example). Many wear a shield-shaped patch (French and Italians, for example). Few wear both (the US Army does, in the form of a US flag and a unit patch). There are a finite number of ISAF contributors. Some can be ruled out because they are non-Western, others because they do not have SOF deployed there, and others because you already know what their SOF wear and carry, or what sleeve insignia they might wear.

Since the weapons guru Tuukka is here, I will add a close-up of their MP5A5:

BLAH! :o *bangs hand against forhead*

Anyway, this is what I conclude so far:
A NATO Blackhawk exercise in Afghanistan by Slovenian soldiers part of ISAF. I'm still not sure about the unit.
The unit is called the Enota za specialno delovanje (ESD), or Special Operations Unit. It was formerly known as the Odred za specialno delovanje (ODSD), or Special Operations Detachment. It is headquartered at the Slovenian military base of Škrilj, in Kocevska (Gottschee), a region of southern Slovenia which until World War Two was mostly German-inhabited.

The unit trains with other NATO SOF, but primarily with US Army Special Forces and Navy SEALs. A handful of ESD members deployed to Afghanistan in February 2004 along with the regular Slovenian contingent (the total contingent was only 27 soldiers, including military police and medics; more here (http://www.slovenskavojska.si/poklicna/misije/misije_isaf5_sv_novosti.htm)).

More can be found on the unit's page (http://www.slovenskavojska.si/poklicna/enote/1br/esd.htm) on the Slovenian Army homepage (http://www.slovenskavojska.si). The text is in Slovenian, but the pictures are worth some amount of Slovenian words.

The pictures I posted, and the one Martin found, were from an exercise last September, as Martin notes. His image shows the flag/shield combo, but here is a profile shot, which also shows the regular Slovenian camouflage.

AL: I have only glanced now and then at this, but this is a little strange:

NATO lists the exercise for the third of August 2004, while the EXIF-data of the images reveals the above posted date.

I was going to mention something about the patch being from a Slovenian Air Force unit, but noticed a little omission in my source and now say 1st Brigade, Army. Although you now have identified the unit either way...

I was going to mention something about the patch being from a Slovenian Air Force unit, but noticed a little omission in my source and now say 1st Brigade, Army. Although you now have identified the unit either way...The ESD is part of the 1st Brigade. The 1st Brigade consists of Slovenia's readily deployable forces for NATO missions. Besides the ESD, it consists of the 10th and 20th Motorized Battalions (10. motorizirani bataljon, 20. motorizirani bataljon), the 17th MP Battalion (17. bataljon vojaške policije) and the 670th Command & Logistics Battalion (670. poveljniško-logisticni bataljon).

Right on Fiji. Wrong on unit.

The First Meridian Squadron, or Counter Revolutionary Warfare Unit, was disbanded after the May 2000 coup. In any event, members of two units are actually pictured. The photo is of members of the recon section of the 3rd Battalion, Fiji Infantry Regiment, receiving combat dive training from the Naval Squadron's dive unit. Article here (about 3/4ths of the way down): http://www.rfmf.mil.fj/news/Feb-March%2005/news.htm

By air, the minimum number of intervening countries you'd have to pass over to get from Spain to where these soldiers were when the photo was taken is one, but this would require a very narrow flight path, so two is a more likely minimum. By land, it's at least four other countries.

Where these soldiers are now is Iraq, so getting there from Spain would require a longer trip and a change of that country's Socialist government's Iraq policy.

Did anyone notice the similarity of the weapons in question (HK33s?) to the Sturmgewehr 44?

Humm saw some of those troops near Fallujha. Wanted to say they are from the Balkens somewhere. Definitly Eastern Europe though.

The soldiers are from Bosnia & Herzegovina, EOD if I recall correctly.

Airbornelawyer

Indeed they are a Bosnian EOD disposal unit (Postrojba za uništenje neeksplodiranih ubojnih sredstava). Bosnia-Herzegovina's first contingent deployed in June 2005, and a second rotation departed a few weeks ago. They are working with II MEF, so 504PIR might indeed have seen them near Fallujah.

The articles I read don't discuss it, but my understanding is that EOD units are among the first to integrate soldiers from the VRS (Vojska Republike Srpske), the Bosnian Serb armed forces, and the VFBiH (Vojska Federacije Bosne i Hercegovine), the combined Bosnian Muslim and Bosnian Croat armed forces.

Arrival (dolazak) of the 1st contingent in Sarajevo on 28 November 2005 and departure (odlazak) of the 2nd contigent from Sarajevo on 29 November 2005:

ֻLOL

Where is the commune and what were they doing there?

The exact "where" i don't know myself...country or region will suffice.

Weapons, kit and (mainly) whiteness say South African Recce, rather than Rhodesians. Also, the coast behind the guy in the middle photo looks more like the Atlantic shore of the Cape Province than the banks of the Zambesi River.

Hmm, toughie.

HK with a Trijicon and modern web gear. Possible HK pistol in the leg harness.

Land Rover with an M-2 and a soldier with an M-4/M-203.

SAS, perhaps?

TRSAS is close, in a historical sense.

The vehicle isn't a Land Rover. What it is is a dead giveaway. ;)

Spot on! have you been to the Cape?

Here are some more pics of Reccies. Crazy bunch, some pics of Terry the Lion also. More pics and info at http://www.recce.co.za

1er RPIMa.
Correct, but can you be more specific.

The category is "Who - what - where". Where are they (within 50 kilometers ;) )?

What is the SAS connection?

What is the vehicle and why is it a dead giveaway?

No, but I've been to http://www.recce.co.za (cheatin' bastard! :D ).

Actually, my unit (11th SFGA) did what we were told was the first post-apartheid jump with the South African airborne in 1994.

Most of what I know of southern Africa is utterly vicarious. My father was a minister and my mother a missionary. She coordinated missionary activities in Latin America and Africa, so I grew up in a house full of brochures, pamphlets, guidebooks and the like on all these places that as a poor kid in Florida I never could hope to visit. It wasn't until the Army that I got a chance to actually go to these places, and South Africa is still one place I haven't gotten to.

That is one hell of a mascot. Although he looks to be a (moderatly) young cat, was he raised from a cub in camp?

MB 240 GD

It is derived from the Mercedes, but their vehicle is actually a Peugeot P4 SAS. Peugeot P4s are the license-built Mercedes used by the French Army, and the SAS model is the version built for the 1er RPIMa:

Except the MG that is firing in the above picture, it looks like a french design. I believe it to be of the AAT? series of French MGs.

TRIn the last picture I posted, the guy on the Ma Deuce has a FAMAS. French army SOF like the 1er RPIMa guys tend to prefer the M4 family (for CT work at least), while I've seen a number of French naval SOF with SIG 551s.

1. FAMAS
2. M4 and MP5
3. Another view of the MGs on the P4

A relatively easy one, I suspect.

Despite the file name, note that the one guy on the right is (probably) not "Totally Gay Nordic Dude #1" and the weapon is not the Continuum Transfunctioner.
