Other than ice and ibuprofen, any suggestions for treating hand injuries resulting from heavy contact?

In my case, I hurt both hands playing ice hockey, but I think the injuries are pretty much the same as you get from fistfights and that sort of thing. There is nothing broken, but it is very hard to clench my fist or support any weight with my fingers. Not sure what exactly happened, but I probably got slashed with a stick or something. My left hand was shaking when I first noticed it last night during the game. Now it just hurts. Right hand is middle finger only, but that is a real problem I need to fix. ;)

Here's a similar thread, although everything may not be applicable. (http://www.professionalsoldiers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3359)

RL,
Good thing you use your head and not your hands to make a livin'.......
stick with your ideas for Tx. If you get the feeling of 'creeking' when you flex or extend your digits then tendonitis has set in and the Tx is immobility for 3-5 days, ice/heat, ibuprofen and no using the keyboard on the computer...unless you stick a straw in your mouth and peck at the keys!!!!
Take care and happy healing.........

"other more intelligent hand injuries", sounds like a good thread, to me.

Go for it swatsurgeon.

RL, I'm just glad it's you asking the question, not me.

Not to screw up the good Doctors advice but in the knife shop, we'd soak that in very cold beer.

You have to drink a lot in order for your hand to cool off.

This is obviously late advice. I grew up playing hockey had a ton of injuries, but year by year for Christmas and birthdays, I asked for hockey equiptment. Hockey gloves would be a start RL

NAH! I just couldn't help it RL
;)

Your post flashed me back when I was in Grade School, I played a couple winters without Hockey Gloves til one B/day. That can be a tad rough on ones hands. Before I got my shin pads, at least I could tape newspapers around my shins. Around 7th grade I had it allllllll.... lol Gloves, shin pads, skates, stick and a bunch of pucks....

Damn RL, That was a GOOD burn, the thread went about 3 weeks. hell by that time, the pus shoulda been nonexistant. (but I'm no Doc, just saw and tended to aaaaaaaalot of sunburn). Good stuff though, when I worked in FL as a commercial diver, I relied on fresh aloe plants to heal the folks that came to visit.
Thing is, seems you are dumpin that burn on your wife. Now, I have smeared alot of sunscreen on females and myself at times....... will I MISS spots on my back...? You bet...! Will I on a female back? NO Fricken Way!! I aim to get very thorough
;) Point being, if someone is applying that stuff to your back....... THEY won't miss any spots... hmmmmm?

BTW, didn't the top of your feet get burned?

TR's advice was good, however to expound, need to use at least a 36 grit pad on that grinder. Does take the fun out of peeling off sheets of skin though.

HEY! Call me a dumbass if you want, but I did not blame anybody but myself. What I said is that I put on plenty of sunscreen, but forgot to ask my wife to get the part of my back I couldn't reach myself.

(That's why my feet did not burn.)

BTW, my back is like permanently tan from this, and I still have blisters or something remaining. It was no fun.

Nah, RL.... I would never call you a dumbass. I have read alot of your posts and admittedly, alot of times twice, that born from necessity. I also know you weren't blaming your wife. Should have somehow used a couple well placed smilies in my last post. :) Besides , I can't remember how many sunburns I had when I was younger. I'd just blame whoever was around at that point to keep them honest. ;)
By the way... how are the hands comming along?

Left is pretty much recovered. Right has some lingering discomfort and difficulty closing fingers in middle and ring fingers only. Not a big deal, though. Played another game Saturday night and it did not bother me. :)

P.S. I knew you were joking around. ;)

There ya go, RL..... You can feel what you can do or not do with that (injury).
At the risk of getting myself in deep water with the medical experts out here (so don't pass this on) ;) . I always figured if some part of me wanted to hurt, the hell with it, the rest of me felt fine and those rebelling parts get ignored til they get back with the program. Oh, which reminds me, I have a way of getting rid of pnuemonia. LOL

So the injury on my right hand never really went away. Still hurts to bend two of the fingers on my right hand, and there is still some swelling at the knuckles closest to the hand.

Going to see a doc about this when my schedule calms down a little, but any thoughts about what it might be?

I'm finding that healing time gets a lot longer as I get a bit older. Many moons can pass before things get better on their own.
Talk to a Doc.

either there are stress fractures or ligament injuries if it has been lasting this long....or the simplist is chronic bursitis due to injury....see a doc (ortho hand)

That's what the ortho said to me when I went to him over my hand. He said 6 to 12 months for the swelling and associated pain to go away since it was on the knuckle and I'm 'aging'.

Just got back from seeing my GP. X-rays negative for fracture (although they show soft tissue inflammation and some arthritis), but he's going to show them to a hand specialist. Prescribed 7.5 mg Mobic for 5 days and told me to rest the hand while taking it. Will refer me to hand specialist if that doesn't work.

RL,

You still having issues, its been what, almost 3 months since you did this and are just now going to the doctor?

I broke this tiny bone in my wrist, one of the carpal bones, and it was 2 months of PT, 3 different docs, BEFORE I had a bone scan that revealed the fracture. Six weeks in a cast later, I was fine. I USED to have belief that doctors were infallible, boy was that naive.

It pays to be an educated, pain-in-the-ass patient. Research your symptoms, ask questions, get 2nd opinions, etc.

At least you hurt yourself playing a contact sport, I broke my wrist playing golf.

I jumped out of planes for 3.5 years, played contact sports, raced mountain bikes, rock-climbed, and the two lingering injuries I ever had to deal with were from playing golf and air hockey (of course, alcohol was involved in the air-hockey incident). :)

Just got back from the hand specialist. New x-rays confirm no fractures. More likely partial tear of ligaments which can't really be treated.

Gave me cortisone injections in both knuckles. Most painful shots I have ever had -- and they still hurt. It wasn't the needle, it was the bolus. Even with Lidocaine, it was really bad.

This better produce some ^$%##%&* results! LOL :(
