Mercedes Unimog??

Has anyone ever thought of the unimog as an off-road, camp, farm, prepper vehicle??

While looking at diesel SUV's I stumbled across the unimog on ebay.. Several look to have a lot of potential for the person who needs a stout hardcore off road truck.

This tan one looks to be GTG for a farm/ranch work truck..

This one looks like it could be a urban soccer mom pick-up,, with a few modification(s).

The Mog was a South African HUMVEE. Our army used them as patrol vehicles and they were later converted into the first mine protected vehicles. Initially, we packed the floor with sandbags and filled the tires with water. It is unstoppable and unbreakable, suited to both sand and mud alike and can handle the most uneven terrain. The portal axles give unprecedented ground clearance and diff locks on front and rear axles do not allow any wheel spinning. It is a fairly narrow vehicle, so unlike the Hummer, can handle normal jungle roads without a machete party scouting ahead. Civilians buy army surplus vehicles and restore them and convert to campers and hunting vehicles.

We've got Merc UnIMOGs in NZDF service for over 30 years.

Awesome, flexible wagons.

We had 1300s and 1800s in the fleet.

Most of the 1300s were auctioned off to the public back in 2001.

Many have been put to use for civilian/private purposes.

I reckon the 1300 is a good size for private use.

Used the 4 x 4 truck version of the MOG in Africa (green part) and never had any problems with them. Was thinking all the time that I'd like to have one back on the block.

Funny how at that time the Army was using 10 wheeled 2.5 and 5 ton trucks. Now the light weight cargo truck looks pretty much like a UNIMOG.

I have been watching several of the youtube videos. They come with up to 3 PTO's, prewired/plumbed for hydraulics, lockers all around. The size is a jeep on steroids, but still small enough to maneuver back logging trails and fire lanes.

AND they have street legal model four door versions.

One of my favorites, it's big weakness would be highway travel. With a 20 speed transmission options, PTO's on many, and Mercedes reliability they are serious work trucks. Here we see quite a few of the older versions and most of them can be licensed, I did run across a warning about some of the more recent models sometimes offered for sale are not eligible for registration...at least here.

They were always pretty solid vehicles but some of the new versions are down right beautiful, expensive, but gorgeous.
