Reading this article reminded me of an incident with my grandfather around 35 years ago.
The television news was bemoaning the poor economy; he got up, walked away, shook his head and said: "the problem with people today is that they don't have any real problems."
He grew up poor during the depression, feeling fortunate to often have a full belly (even if it was due to eating canned cow tongue).
Having had irresponsible parents, bitterness accumulated during childhood; he left for war as a young man and in his own words, didn't care if he came back.
At the age of 20, somewhere in a hole in the sand on an island called Guadalcanal, the joys of dysentery and jungle warfare against the Japanese gave him perspective.
He made his peace with his Creator and his parents.
He quickly found a wife while in Australia, subsequently fought at New Britain and Guam, and settled down after the war.
Great contentment was found in simply being alive, putting in an honest day's work, enjoying a good meal, and having a wife and son.
He never could understand why people in this country were so upset with circumstances which were actually quite good.
