Junior ROTC and ROTC programs around the globe will participate in an anniversary 5k fun run on April 23 to commemorate 100 years of service.

The run is designed to take place simultaneously worldwide, with fields of runners starting everywhere at 1500 Greenwich Mean Time. Teams here on the East Coast will start at 11 a.m.

Cumberland County high school JROTC teams participating in the event include Jack Britt, South View, Westover and Douglas Byrd.

All of those teams have online registration available through pages on active.com. Several Cape Fear region high schools, including Overhills, Lee County, Harnett Central and Lumberton, as well as others, also are participating.

ROTC programs from Methodist, Campbell, Fayetteville State and UNC Pembroke will host a joint run at Methodist.

JROTC and ROTC cadets can sign up to run the races for free. All other participants can sign up for $30 online, and their host units will receive $5 from those fees to benefit their unit. Paid participants will receive a 100th anniversary commemorative T-shirt.
