View Full Version : Rift Among Navy SEALs Over Members Who Cash In on Brand

I've often observed that the more intense and sustained the combat one was in, the less one is likely to talk about it. The WWII vets and Korean War vets I know rarely talk about their experiences and never puff themselves up. War was hell to them. Some Vietnam vets and many Desert Storm, OEF and OIF vets I know seem to more likely be willing to talk about their "combat" experiences.

Eric Greitens’s bid for governor of Missouri hinges on his experience as a Navy
SEALs member, which he has chronicled in three books and promotes on his
campaign web site, where he is pictured wearing his combat uniform, holding
a rifle. “In the SEALs we learned, ‘there is no prize for second place in a
gunfight,’ ” he said recently on Twitter
Now Mr. Greitens, seeking the Republican nomination, finds himself in a
battle with some former comrades, who charged in a slickly produced YouTube
video that he exaggerated his record and was unduly benefiting from his time
in the SEALs. The dispute lays bare a widening rift among Navy SEALs,
provoked by what leaders and many in the ranks describe as rampant
commercial and personal exploitation of a brotherhood that once prized
discretion.
In recent months, the Naval Special Warfare Command in Coronado,
Calif., which oversees the elite force, has told its men to lower their profile and
tried to rein in public appearances by active*duty members.
The Pentagon imposed a rule last September restricting the appearance of service members
in video games, movies and television shows. Current and former members
have widely circulated a pointed critique — titled “Navy SEALs Gone Wild:
Publicity, Fame, and the Loss of the Quiet Professional” — that laments the
commercialization and warns that it is doing harm.
“The raising of Navy SEALs to celebrity status through media exploitation
and publicity stunts has corrupted the culture of the SEAL community by
incentivizing narcissistic and profit*oriented behavior,” Lt. Forrest S. Crowell,
a SEAL, wrote in the critique, his master’s thesis for the Naval Postgraduate
School in Monterey, Calif. Partisan politicking and public disclosure of tactics,
he added, “erodes military effectiveness, damages national security, and
undermines healthy civil*military relations.”
But the pushback has had little sway over former members who are
increasingly giving paid speeches, sounding off on politics on Fox News and
stamping the force’s name on hats, backpacks, vitamins and even a campaign
bus. A television show by the Weinstein Company, working with a former
SEALs consultant, is set to air on the History channel later this year, and a
half*dozen books are scheduled to roll off the presses in coming months,
adding to the 100*plus published by former SEALs since 2001

Hell, I wish someone would bring a defamation lawsuit from within the US Army SF community to tell the SEALs to stop using that term. It's not theirs in the first place.
Every time a SEAL gets up on his soap box and claims to be a "QP" he has to pay the GBF a large portion of his earnings.
I have worked with SEALs since the mid-80's, and still am. Most have been professional, many very professional, but very few have been quite.

Remember, bad for SEALS and Special Forces, unless you're a General, Admiral or E-9, then it's ok.......
William H. McRaven is selling the SEAL brand very well and no one really cares. But when the lower enlisted make a few bucks off their hard earned background it's a national security issue.....
Yeah right....
On my Kindle, I recently bought Lone Survivor, 13 Hours, and Inside Delta Force.
Because of this, it appears that Amazon's algorithm said "This guy's interested in elite forces kind of stuff". OK, I'll go along with that (for lack of a better term).
So it started suggesting something I did not know existed: SEAL-themed romance novels.
All of a sudden, my suggested reads are titles like "My Hot SEAL" and "Coronado Heartthrob"....
This is not the Navy's proudest moment.
Especially since I had to say, "At least the photo shows a woman, too..."
Don't they hook you up with an agent after successful completions of BUDS....

The Brits has a similar dust up when SAS General Sir Peter Edgar de la Cour de la Billière had his autobiography approved for publication ("Looking for Trouble" ), but the MOD was refusing permission for SAS Sergent Steven Billy Mitchel to publish his fictional novel about action in Iraq (BRAVO TWO ZERO) under his pseudonym Andy McNab.
Eventually McNab, "Nish" Bruce, Frank Collins, and others were allowed to write their novels. Now it looks like everyone has a publisher. ;)

Review Summary
THE REAL BRAVO TWO ZERO is now in the top 10 bestseller list and has received a brilliant review in FRONT MAGAZINE: 'Asher reveals fact from fiction and gives the full, no-bullshit account of what actually happened 'Michael Asher, ex-SAS man and desert specialist discovered some glaring inconsistencies in the best-selling Gulf War books by Andy McNab and Chris Ryan......
... Intelligence sources say this is a powerful 'expose' of the men called 'McNab' and 'Ryan'.'SAS Trooper Michael Asher's powerful re-telling of the truth behind Bravo Two Zero and The One That Got Away raises serious questions as to how tall were these two tales in the first place........ We are also asked how gullible are we and also how credible is Asher. The conclusions either way are disturbing.' * * * * SCOTTISH LEGION NEWS

Thanks Surf; do you have an interest in the whole affair? Three's three books by the team; Coburn's, Ryan's, and the infamous McNab's, anyone read Ryan's or Coburn's?

CAARNG 68W,
No real interest. I have not read Coburn or Ryan's novels, but have read General de la Billière's autobiography, as I was in England when it was initially released.

Navy SEALs gone wild: publicity, fame, and the loss of the quiet professional
Crowell, Forrest S.
Monterey, California: Naval Postgraduate School
And there's the use of "quiet professional" yet again. Never saw that as an attribute sought by the SEALs.

I'm guessing this young SEAL Lt. never heard of Jesse Ventura or a whole list of other SEALS that have done well. I'm not going to read this Jr. SEAL officers "paper" but I'm guessing he's missing a big point, SEALS, Rangers, Special Forces folks are driven and possess a mindset that will always set them apart.
And because they use this to get ahead they are self serving and narcissistic, maybe some, but not all. I'm sure his paper mentions all the SEAL officers that have cashed in writing books......
Remember, it ain't bragging if you can do it, or have done it. ;)
