Smoking high-strength cannabis may damage nerve fibres in brain
Ian Sample Science editor
Thursday 26 November 2015
High-strength cannabis may damage nerve fibres that handle the flow of messages across the two halves of the brain, scientists claim. Brain scans of people who regularly smoked strong skunk-like cannabis revealed subtle differences in the white matter that connects the left and right hemispheres and carries signals from one side of the brain to the other.
The changes were not seen in those who never used cannabis or smoked only the less potent forms of the drug, the researchers found.
The study is thought to be the first to look at the effects of cannabis potency on brain structure, and suggests that greater use of skunk may cause more damage to the corpus callosum, making communications across the brain’s hemispheres less efficient.
Paola Dazzan, a neurobiologist at the Institute of Psychiatry at King’s College London, said the effects appeared to be linked to the level of active ingredient, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), in cannabis. While traditional forms of cannabis contain 2 to 4 % THC, the more potent varieties (of which there are about 100), can contain 10 to 14% THC, according to the DrugScope charity.
“If you look at the corpus callosum, what we’re seeing is a significant difference in the white matter between those who use high potency cannabis and those who never use the drug, or use the low-potency drug,” said Dazzan. The corpus callosum is rich in cannabinoid receptors, on which the THC chemical acts.

Hmmm... brain rot, explains the liberal bent toward cannabis...
And alcohol doesn't affect the brain:confused:confused:

Difference is we've known about the effects of alcohol for centuries. And like any other drug is has bad effects when overdone.
That said as an intelligent civilized country why would we "now" decide to legalize another drug that has been found to screw up our children?
That's ok, I've come to understand libtard logic. And I really don't mind pot being legalized. We need more folks working at McDonalds and Burger King anyway. And it will cut down on crime. And only those gifted with a low IQ will be using it anyway.

Because like alcohol making it illegal accomplished nada...aside from making it a cash cow for organized crime, and law enforcement.
I enjoy bourbon, if my neighbor enjoys weed why should the government stick it nose in his business?
I have known many people who smoked weed, and none to my knowledge had problems being productive members of society...or beaten their spouses, children, or others....I can't say the same about alcohol.

Every pothead I ever knew either wound up a bum, incarcerated or with glitter on it's beard.

Wow you met my brothers when and where? Mom says that there is no way that these are her children and that her biological kids were swapped out in the hospital by crazed hippies.

Do you believe that marijuana is harder for children to obtain because it is illeagal?

Do you think that it will be harder to obtain because it is regulated?
You can't just grow a bottle of whiskey.
Cannabis has its benefits. Because it can not be easily regulated and taxed, our government has done a good job demonizing it, in my opinion, but appears that they're coming around.
"Chemical components of Cannabis, called cannabinoids, activate specific receptors found throughout the body to produce pharmacologic effects, particularly in the central nervous system and the immune system."

Antitumor Effects
"One study in mice and rats suggested that cannabinoids may have a protective effect against the development of certain types of tumors.[3] During this 2-year study, groups of mice and rats were given various doses of THC by gavage. A dose-related decrease in the incidence of hepatic adenoma tumors and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) was observed in the mice. Decreased incidences of benign tumors (polyps and adenomas) in other organs (mammary gland, uterus, pituitary, testis, and pancreas) were also noted in the rats. In another study, delta-9-THC, delta-8-THC, and cannabinol were found to inhibit the growth of Lewis lung adenocarcinoma cells in vitro and in vivo .[4] In addition, other tumors have been shown to be sensitive to cannabinoid-induced growth inhibition.[5-8]"

"Cannabinoids appear to kill tumor cells but do not affect their nontransformed counterparts and may even protect them from cell death."

Furthermore, why has the US government Department of Health and Human Services has held a patent on Cannabinoids as antioxidants and neuroprotectants since 2003?

With that said, I don't deny the many problems associated with recreational pot use.

When I say "children" I mean any and all younger than me. The teenagers, 20 year olds, 30 year olds, 40 year olds and those kids not yet old enough to know what pot is yet.
We (should) lead by example and with that I'd guess most of the green berets on this board don't smoke dope or do illegal drugs. I don't.

I don't either but I am convinced that most of those worthless politicians in the state capital here and in DC do....

Every time I've done the OPM interview for a clearance PR the investigators always look at me funny when I tell them I never did pot even in high school or college.
When advocates say that legalization will put the cartels out of business, I just laugh. A multi-billion dollar criminal enterprise will just undercut the "state" and its taxes. Is legal pot cheaper than illegal now?
The legal pot business can't use the federally regulated banks. In WA and CO this has created a cottage industry in pot cash security. Here in WA there have been robberies of some legal pot shops.
Democratic Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper says his state’s decision to legalize pot “was a bad idea” that other state’s should avoid for several years until more is known.
“There’s a whole regulatory environment…that really regulates alcohol. We’re starting from scratch, and we don’t have a federal partner because [marijuana] is still illegal federally,” said Hickenlooper.

This is from Jan. 2015 It did not take long for the Colorado guv to realize what a mistake they made out there. Legalization is always touted as being a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow in regards to state revenue, I do not see it. I have spent too much time having to deal with potheads to ever think that legalization is the answer. I do not have much time for those who abuse alcohol either.
I thought this explained liberalism and progressives.
My thinking too, play their games.
