New York City finds one in five adults has mental health problems

NEW YORK | By Laila Kearney

At least one in five adult New Yorkers suffer from depression, substance abuse, suicidal thoughts or other psychological disorders every year, according to a report released on Thursday ahead of Mayor Bill de Blaiso's new mental-health initiative.

New York City's Department of Health and Mental Hygiene expects to release the plan, known as NYC Thrive, by the end of next month. It is aimed at preventing and treating psychological disorders among the city's 8.4 million residents.

The "white paper" released Thursday outlines the size and scope of the problem facing the New York City.

"We have a set of public health issues that affect many people and affect them very deeply," said Dr. Gary Belkin, a deputy commissioner of the health department. "We know what we're going to be doing, and over the coming weeks you're going to be hearing about it."

"1 out of 5 people in NYC have mental health problems."

That number seems awfully low, in my opinion.

I would think it would be more like 1 out of 2 or even 1 out of 1 1/2 would better fit that issue.

Recycled quackery; AKA self licking ice cream cone. Government/academic shrinks belaboring the obvious and publishing as if it were a new phenomena. IIRC 50-60 years ago they did studies with rats (test subjects with population densities and basic impulses closely correlating to liberals) that conclusively proved overcrowding resulted in psychological issues (NYC with its millions ring a bell for anyone?). Now we have government/academic shrinks belaboring the obvious and publishing as if it were a new phenomena so they can advance the progressive agenda of create/publicize a problem so they can offer a government solution that justifies their paychecks and categorizes a significant percentage of the population as needing their "services" (NTM potentially requiring more "control" by the self-same gov't agency).

Sorry - didn't mean to get lost in a rant. My tin foil hat was starting to break down and the voices were leaking through again.

Pastafarian woman gets to wear strainer on head in license photo

Published November 14, 2015
·Associated Press

BOSTON – A Massachusetts agency is letting a woman who belongs to the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster wear a colander on her head in her driver's license photo after she cited her religious beliefs.

Lowell resident Lindsay Miller said Friday that she "absolutely loves the history and the story" of Pastafarians, whose website says has existed in secrecy for hundreds of years and entered the mainstream in 2005.

Miller says wearing the spaghetti strainer allows her to express her beliefs, like other religions are allowed to do.

A spokesman for the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles says policy does not permit head coverings or hats on license photos, but exceptions are made for religious reasons.

Lawyer Patty DeJuneas calls Pastafarianism a "secular religion that uses parody to make its point."

It is estimated that America has 7% of the population suffering from alcoholism and 6% experiencing depression, at any given time = 13%

Not saying that these aren't real health issues, but let's not pretend "mental health problems" doesn't conjure up an image of the crazy homeless guy on the corner, talking out loud to no one in particular, instead of the high flying lawyer at Gibson, Dunn, and Crutcher, who has 8 double whiskeys a week (yes the medical definition of alcoholism) and is on 50mg of Zoloft.

Shit, add in New Yorks disproportionate Irish population alone, with our drinking and our Catholic guilt and there's your 20%. ;)

NYC may be 1 in 9, but it appears that the military is worse off!

Nearly 1 in 4 active duty members showed signs of a mental health condition, according to a 2014 study in JAMA Psychiatry.

It looks like the enlistee's were " troubled" before they came to an understanding Drill Sergeant for remedial consultation.

I wonder if some conditions like "intermittent explosive disorder" wouldn't be "cured" ricky ticky by some country boy with a long fuse, much patience, and a mean right hook.

Study: Soldiers Enter Military With Higher Rates Of Mental Illness
The study’s new findings, published as three papers in JAMA Psychiatry, show that soldiers who join the military come in with much higher rates of mental illness than the general public and that most suicides can be traced to these pre-enlistment conditions

Twenty Percent of US Soldiers Had Mental Illness Before Enlisting

One major data point from the studies: 1 in 5 soldiers had a common mental illness before enlisting in the army, but were able to clear the military’s screening procedures. Intermittent explosive disorder was the most common disorder in the study and was prevalent in the the pre-enlistment population at nearly six times the civilian rate
