It should've said:
He was the First U.S. serviceman killed in ground combat operations against Islamic State, which has been the target of daily air strikes in Iraq and Syria by a U.S.-led coalition for more than a year.

I also didn't say service branch. I was trying to be anonymous about the identity. Gender roles aren't an issue here.

I agree the title was misleading, but I suppose it goes along with the presidents' and SecDefs' policy that no "Combat Forces" are currently deployed in Iraq. (Sorry didn't mean to politicize this.)
RIP Warrior and thank you for your service.
I also didn't say service branch. I was trying to be anonymous about the identity. Gender roles aren't an issue here. Please forgive me for "not" knowing, the plethora of different genders that serve in the US military.
BTW:
LGBPTTQQIIAA+: any combination of letters attempting to represent all the identities in the queer community, this near-exhaustive one (but not exhaustive) represents Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Pansexual, Transgender, Transsexual, Queer, Questioning, Intersex, Intergender, Asexual, Ally

I regret not seeing the dual meaning of your initial correction. I think I was paraphrasing the article which does mention the ongoing operation against IS, not simply, "ground combat in Iraq." I thought it was implied, not the start of another Iraq war etc. As far as using "member", it is ubiquitous with soldier, sailor, marine to me since that's the term we always use. It is highly likely they were not female.
Rest in Peace, Warrior!!

As I mentioned in post #4 this goes against the official policy positions of the President and SecDef. Well tonight on NBC news they called the SecDef on the carpet about this mission. He tap danced his way around it and would only say that 'direct combat missions will continue on a case by case basis.' Translation: you guys are on your own.
Sounds like they (POTUS/SecDef) got their dicks caught in their hands (again.) I'm glad to see the media finally calling them liars.
This kind of "mission support" from Democratic leadership led to the debacle in Mogadishu. I hope we are not going to sacrifice too many people to realize you are in with both feet and not trying to (micro)manage from Washington.
