I've had less than stellar (okay, really bad) supermarket sushi and sashimi both in Asia and the United States. Yet I keep buying it in the hope of finding something amazing at a bargain price compared to the restaurants. Finally, today I struck gold by finding the right Asian supermarket.

I feel your pain! The struggle is real. There's a little place back in Memphis that we used to frequent quite often. Of all places, it's a sushi spot tucked inside a gas station. I know that sounds bizarre and crazy, but I swear they make the best sushi! If you ever pass through, you gotta check 'em out.

You're a brave man to try grocery store sushi.

(And that beautiful shine is probably chemical preservatives sprayed onto the fish before plating them. Just saying. ;))

Perhaps. But I really think the shine was from the lemon slices I squeezed over the pieces just before the photo. I'm still alive so far. :D

I have a travel tube of wasabi and it, along with soy sauce, was used for about half of the sashimi.

Another enlightened soul. I use Wasabi instead of Hot English mustard on anything requiring relish. Fat white pickled ginger also serves as a great mouth refresher and appetite suppressant.

Love the ginger but wasabi taste like kerosene to me. The best sashimi I get is when I go to Cedros Island, Baja California for Yellowtail (Hamachi). Fresh off the boat, it literally melts in your mouth. I quit eating octopus (Tako). After watching them in the wild and in an aquarium, I think they are very intelligent.

If I stop eating animals that are smarter than me I'll never move up the food chain.
