View Full Version : Possable Government Shutdown...

I have been a Federal Employee since I left the Military.

The one thing that bothers me about this whole "Shut Down" or as our office manager has announced it as "The Republicans Lack of a Continuing Budget" is how does this hurt anyone but the Federal Employees?

We were told that we are required to report to work on October 1 no matter what. We were also told that because of the way that things have gone in the past that we will be required to be at work, because hey why should we just sit at home when we will just receive the back pay once the budget is passed.

I want this shutdown to mean something to the country if it does happen, not to just have some idiot shut down the WW2 memorial so that Vets cant see it or something else stupid.

The general public has no idea what all of this means, they just see a monument or park shut down, but the rest of it all keeps going. We will still have offices open to give the public their handouts.

Meanwhile the management staff if our office is pressing for us to donate to the combined federal campaign or to bring in food for their food drive. They should wait and save the food for their employees who might need to eat it when we continue to have to work and not be paid.

And we also found out that they don't want to furlough us because if they did and this thing last they will have to let us apply for unemployment, and that would ruin Barry's numbers for a recovering country!

Ok Now I fell a little better

Thanks

Let's see - they didn't have the money to pay the park employee's - so they paid the park employee's to make life hell for the visitors.

Yeah, shut it all down.

Your key statement "...because hey why should we just sit at home when we will just receive the back pay once the budget is passed. ..."

Everybody knows that so all the angst is just theater.

No offense Mike, the government bureaucracy has become the largest entitlement program entitlement program in the history of the world and it is filled with a large percentage of non-productive bottom feeders.

Shut it down and let nature take its course.

Why doesn't Barry just create an EO that levies severe sanctions on Congress if the Gov shuts down? Maybe forbid DOJ employees assigned to protect Congressmen to work during shutdown or something?

Last shutdown didn't affect me other than knocking out tasks on the honey do list.

That's interesting as I was told the opposite. I'm with WRAIR and with the last shutdown I was told not to log-on to the WRAIR website, check my e-mail or use my Blackberry or there would be retribution.

Somehow I think someone higher wanted to be sure someone even higher got the message that productivity would suffer.

My wife mentioned this yesterday when we were running errands as she felt that a bill should be passed that allowed Congressional Reps participate in sequestration. I told her that in every one that I have ever gone through that would be nothing more than a symbolic gesture as the only ones who really got hosed were the ones classified as mission essential as they are the ones who come in for no pay while the rest of the govt. sits at home waiting for the impasse to be resolved knowing that they will get comp'ed with Admin Leave for all hours they missed while those of us that worked get taxed at a higher rate when the impasse gets resolved. Sometimes you have got to laugh at how stupidly we run this nation as that is the only viable option left.

OPM regs are that only those in the civil service that are classed as 'Emergency Essential' can be required to report to work in a no pay status.
Future possible replacement of lost time is not taken into consideration.
And civilian 'EE' status in a CONUS based unit with both civilian and military personnel is nearly impossible to support. If you're in a total civilian unit that directly supports Active Duty, it's easier to get status as EE, but even then it must be supported by detailed documentation.

When us DACs had days cut during the '13 sequester, those regulations were explicitly explained to the unit's command by our CPO.

Your management, even if you're in the excepted service, is asking for it if you're not 'EE'.

The government logic gets even better... some of us were forced to convert active duty mission essential positions into non-EE civilian positions, and during any shutdown we're forbidden from shifting those truly mission essential civilian duties back to a military member. For example, many Installation Deployment Officers who run an AF base's deployment machine are not EE, and having a military member who works for the IDO do the IDO's work is a labor violation. When this was pointed out last time to the superiors the answer was "just figure it out", or in other words "break the rules but don't get caught because you'll get no top cover." So much for "Integrity First".

Just received my notice that as an exempt employee I will be coming in to work without pay should the children in Congress decide not to play well with each other some more. Good times my friends, good times.:munchin

We need to get rid of every one of the entitled cry babies in both houses and put some people in there that actually know how to take care of things like budgets, etc.

These lesser evolved primates are simply taking care of themselves as we know they won't work a day without receiving their pay.

So I thought the "No Pay Due" was to never happen during a USG Shutdown??

Reading this, not so sure...

Of course this is a shutdown and not a sequester 'layoff', but when we had hours cut in '13, even our (one or two) FLSA exempt DACs were included. Have fun.

I am set to resign from the USG on 9 Oct. They can go fuck themselves for all I care. The USG does not deserve the loyalty of the people that serve.

Maybe the USG doesn't deserve the loyalty but the people do. IMO. I knew what was possible when I signed on. I got my letter today also.
