"He was a perfect soldier from his first days, and everyone knew he was a star," an unnamed former comrade who is still active in the Georgian military told McClatchy DC. "We were well trained by American special forces units, and he was the star pupil."

"said anonymous Georgian defense official"

Putin wants into the fray, he has boots in Syria, he wants Georgia.

I'd want to look for a verifiable anonymous source.

Is there any direct proof, to the public knowledge, that a top IS commander may have serious ties to Russian Intelligence?

There sure if a lot of conjecture and speculation in that article with any supporting facts.

The idea that ANY intelligence service would run two of the most senior insurgent leaders that killed scores of that same nation's military...and fellow intelligence officers...only to ultimately kill those same assets/leaders is absolutely ludicrous.

Finally, the fact that the author doesn't even mention the Tajik OMON Colonel that recently defected to ISIS, displays a clear lack of understanding of Russian-speakers of that faction as well as their support from the Imirat Kavkaz in the Caucasus.

Just my two cents.
