I'm kinda shocked, an ultra left-wing, socialist Seattle government not being able to settle an agreement with an very left-wing Seattle teachers union.

My socialist, left-wing, corrupt, progressive side says: Sell more drugs to the public! Screw selling weed, sell meth and heroin also!! That will boost your revenue! If I were in the Seattle government I'd place vending machines all over the city with a heroin kit, syringe, spoon alcohol prep pad and of course a few grams of heroin. Same for meth and assorted pills.

This is how liberal/progressive/socialism works, they cannot balance a budget they just continue to spent until they go bankrupt, then they blame Bush.

Seattle teachers will strike on the first day of school Wednesday after last-minute talks over wages and other issues failed to stop them from walking the picket lines in Washington state’s largest school district.
Wednesday classes were canceled for the 53,000 students in Seattle Public Schools on what would have been the start of a new school year.
Phyllis Camapno, the union’s vice president, said Tuesday that the district came back with a proposal the union “couldn’t take seriously,” and they decided to end negotiations for the night.
Seattle Education Association members, which represent about 5,000 teachers and support staff, plan to picket Wednesday morning at all schools. The union voted to walk out last week if a tentative agreement wasn’t sealed by the first day of school.
"Nobody really wants to strike, but at this point the school board has not come to the table with a serious proposal to get it done," Campano said.
Both sides still remain far apart on certain issues, including pay raises, teacher evaluations and the length of the school day. The district earlier offered an pay increase of nearly 9 percent over three years. The union countered with a 10.5 percent increase over two years, Campano said. But she said the district barely budged from its previous proposal.
The Seattle Times reports that shortly before midnight on Monday, the district countered a $172 million union proposal with a $62 million offer that included wage increases, staff increases for special education and 30 minutes of additional instruction time in the third year of the deal.

I'd love to have a job that: pays as well as these teachers get paid, has summer off, has job security/benefits like they have, and has no penalty for mediocre performance. As an adjunct faculty member at two universities, I experienced first-hand the results of the current teaching. I'm old enough to remember when those results were excellent. That's no longer the case, I assure you. I recall one senior who was aghast when I requested an outline of an article rather than a paper. Her problem? No one had ever taught her how to do an outline. Go figure.

Strike indeed.

I love the Elementary School Principal salaries. They get paid way more than a lot of people that I know that get shot at for a living. I guess you never know when one of those dangerous 6 year olds will have their pop tart gun go off and shortly there after a mass casualty event occurs on their watch.

So do the sleazebag politicians who send America's under payed military service members overseas.

I feel fortunate that I can say the principal at my daughters school deserves whatever he gets plus 10%. We should get rid of the security blanket known as unions and tenure, and allocate a reasonable amount of our tax dollars to the education system for payroll and school expenses. Local schools should offer a base starting wage, based on cost of living, and salary increases based on annual reviews just like the private sector.

Good public school teachers and principle's deserve more than they get paid on average in my opinion.

Furthermore, our tax dollars go to the unions with the most influence, and my progressive state is one of the worst offenders (CA). Shocking right?
