Top Mexican drug lord Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman escapes from prison, officials say

Top Mexican drug kingpin Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman has escaped from a maximum security prison for the second time, officials announced late Saturday.

Guzman, who headed the powerful Sinaloa Cartel, was last seen in the showers of the Altiplano prison, about 56 miles outside the Mexico City, according to a statement from the National Security Commission. He went to the shower area but after some time was lost by security camera surveillance. When authorities went to check his cell, it was empty.

A manhunt began immediately in the surrounding area and highways. Flights have also been suspended at Toluca airport near the penitentiary.

Guzman was captured in February 2014 after more than a decade on the lam. He was listed as 56 years old at the time, though there are varying dates for his birth. He faces multiple federal drug trafficking indictments in the U.S. and was on the DEA’s most-wanted list.

During his time as a fugitive, Guzman transformed himself from a middling Mexican capo into arguably the most powerful drug trafficker on the world. His fortune grew to be estimated at more than $1 billion, according to Forbes magazine, which listed him among the "World's Most Powerful People" and ranked him above the presidents of France and Venezuela.

The Sinaloa Cartel empire stretches throughout North American and has reached Europe and Australia. The cartel has been heavily involved in the bloody drug war in Mexico for the last decade which has cost about 100,000 lives.

Sinaloa is believed now to control most of the major crossing points for drugs at the U.S. border with Mexico.

Bill Clinton would have welcomed him with open arms. All it would take would be a $500 million dollar "donation" to the Clinton Foundation and he would be sleeping in the Lincoln bedroom....

When I read this earlier I thought it was a joke. A lighted and ventilated mile long tunnel out of the most "maximum" security venue Mexico has. Holy crap does this look bad for Mexico. You would figure a guy like him would not be on the "honor block" free to roam about as he pleases...Heroin overdose deaths are at approx. 9k a year, compared to 3-4k a year before 2010. Cocaine overdoses are up also after peaking in 2006. Probably time for some type of border wall?

How about a 12-mile deep wall consisting of a military training impact area?

That's Mexico. They aren't just not our friends but they are a third world nation.

I work at a $800 million hospital complex built mostly by donations from the public and a small group of billionaire philanthropists. They started taking donations a few years back and the hospital and several clinics were built in 2012. If left to the people to fund the wall, I bet a $4 billion border fence could become a reality. I know I'd donate.

Catch me if you can: El Chapo's son releases photos that he claims show billion-dollar drug lord enjoying a beer and plane ride... as it's revealed the DEA warned Mexican authorities about escape plans 16 MONTHS ago

Pictures purport to show Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman after his escape
Were allegedly sent to El Blog de Narco by one of Guzman's sons
Drug lord also allegedly posted threats to Donald Trump who had criticized Guzman's escape
Trump has called in the FBI to investigate the threats made against him
The Republican presidential candidate replied 'I'm fighting for much more than myself. I'm fighting for the future of our country which is being overrun by criminals. You can't be intimidated. This is too important.'
Mexican authorities have not recaptured El Chapo since his escape on Saturday

As photographs emerged today of billionaire drug-lord 'El Chapo' appearing to taunt authorities with his new-found freedom by drinking beer in public and flying inside an airplane, it has been revealed that the Drug Enforcement Administration alerted Mexico of his escape plans 16 months ago.

Sent to a blog which monitors the on-going drug war in Mexico by one of Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman's sons, the pictures were allegedly taken after his audacious escape just two days ago.

If verified, the pictures would be the first of the notorious cartel leader to surface since his prison break on Saturday morning from Altiplano jail and follow Twitter threats to presidential candidate Donald Trump warning him to stop his anti-Mexico rhetoric.

While the photos are still in question, DEA documents reveal that drug agents first got information in March 2014 that Guzman family members and drug-world associates were considering ‘potential operations to free Guzman’, shortly after his recapture at a seaside resort in February 2014.

Though not an official twitter account, similar themes have been echoed on blogs associated with cartel news. We should build a wall between Mexico and have the Mexicans pay for it. Maybe finance it with that $200m a year we give them in aid?

An easy way to pay for security would be to tax at say 25% any money order leaving the country. To avoid this tax you would be required to prove citizenship or have a valid Green Card.
Also require to State Department to follow the law that allows foreign aid stopped to any country that refuses to repatriate their criminal aliens
