Mother of Washington state NAACP leader says daughter falsely claimed to be black

Published June 12, 2015
·FoxNews.com

Controversy erupted around a local NAACP leader in Washington state Thursday after family members told a local newspaper that she had misrepresented herself as black.

Rachel Dolezal is the head of the NAACP's chapter in Spokane and is also a part-time professor in the Africana Studies Program at Eastern Washington University. The Spokane Spokesman-Review says that Dolezal described her ethnicity as white, black, and American Indian in an application to be the volunteer chairwoman of the city's Police Ombudsman Commission, a position to which she was duly appointed.

But Dolezal's mother, Ruthanne, told the paper that the family's actual ancestry is Czech, Swedish, and German, along with some "faint traces" of Native American heritage.

"It's very sad that Rachel has not just been herself," Ruthanne Dolezal said. "Her effectiveness in the causes of the African-American community would have been so much more viable, and she would have been more effective if she had just been honest with everybody."

Ruthanne Dolezal said that her daughter began to "disguise herself" in the mid-2000s, after the family had adopted four African-American children.

Rachel Dolezal did not immediately respond to her mother's claim when contacted by the Spokesman-Review, first saying "I feel like I owe [the NAACP] executive committee conversation" about what she called a "multi-layered issue."

After being contacted again, Dolezal said, "That question is not as easy as it seems. There's a lot of complexities ... and I don’t know that everyone would understand that." Later, she said, "We're all from the African continent," an apparent reference to scientific studies tracing the origin of human life to east Africa.

Actually they changed the law in 2000 so that she can claim to be black. The way it reads is if you identify with any race. Also according to scientist we all originated from Africa so everyone in the world can claim black heritage. I am all behind her on this one. The liberals did it to themselves.

Emphasis mine

Agreed,, Someone has to come up with a new question and new words.

Additionally,, There are millions of people that were born in or have direct blood lines to Africa,, some portion of that number are 100% WHITE....

You can't ask: "Are you African-American" and get an answer that explains your race...

How dare someone venture to assume an identity that is different from the one they were born with...
...unless it is to further an approved agenda

Bruce Gender is a fucking national hero.... purely because of an "I'm not happy with "me" attitude...
....look at me I have titties now.
Forget for a moment that Bruce Gender is still dealing with legal troubles over a wrongful death lawsuit from a fatal automobile accident when he crashed his Cadillac Escalade into a Lexus
...or the next time he crashed an Escalade into someones Prius.
he's still a hero.

This broad pretended to be black...
...but did it in a way that actually ADVANCED the social standing of black people.

Bruce Gender had plastic surgery and bought some tit's because it was all about him.
Bruce Gender is a god damned cultural hero now.

This lady was working for the NAACP and was apparently doing a pretty good fucking job of it BECAUSE THE NAACP IS DEFENDING HER
The NAACP even released this statement:
“One’s racial identity is not a qualifying criteria or disqualifying standard for NAACP leadership."

...but this broad is now being painted as some sort of James Bond super villain

Nice
Very nice indeed

The entire spectrum of social equality issues just tickles the living shit out of me.

Black white man woman straight gay rich poor liberal conservative...
...we have all but destroyed the "Baseball, Hot Dogs, Apple Pie, and Chevrolet" American culture in favor of collectivism and inclusiveness.

George Carlin's politics always pissed me off, but it was mostly because he always managed to hit the raw nerves with some of the shit he said but the fact is, George always got it right.

"When you are born in this world, you get a ticket to the freak show; when you are born in America you get a front row seat."

It always pissed me off to hear Carlin talk shit about America because,
...well, because, 'MURICA

Sadly, America has spoken, and obviously the masses really do prefer the freak show.
...at least we have a front row seat.

Born with or labeled with? Approved agenda?

Identity is a complicated thing, always has been and is even more so today with the results obtained through the Human Genome Project and the ability to undergo individual DNA testing to identify one’s specific regional ancestral origins.

It wasn’t that long ago that in places like America, people with African ancestry who could pass as people of European ancestry would sometimes attempt to do so for social and economic gain, as well as a greater sense of security within the existing society.

Today, historians, cultural anthropologists, and scientists are challenging the way(s) in which we look at racial identity; how and why they came about, how and why they were used, and what influence(s) they may have had on our constantly evolving world cultural history.

Here’s an excerpt on the topic from A History of World Societies (8th Ed), one of the many texts used in teaching AP World History for high school students.

Just something to think about. Or not.

And so it goes…

Richard

“’In recent years, historians have found in the scientific revolution and the Enlightenment a crucial turning point in European ideas about race. A primary catalyst for new ideas about race was the urge to classify nature unleashed by the scientific revolution’s insistence on careful empirical observation. In The System of Nature (1735) Swedish botanist Carl von Linne’ argued that nature was organized into a God-given hierarchy. As scientists developed more elaborate taxonomies of plant and animal species, they also began to classify humans into hierarchically ordered “races” and to investigate the origins of race. The Comte de Buffon argued that humans originated with one species that then developed into distinct races due largely to climactic conditions. According to Immanuel Kant, there were four human races, each of which had derived from an original race of “white brunette” people.

Using the word race to designate biologically distinct groups of humans, akin to distinct animal species, was new. Previously, Europeans grouped other peoples into “nations” based on their historical, political, and cultural affiliations, rather than on supposedly innate physical differences.

Unsurprisingly, when European thinkers drew up a hierarchical classification of human species, their own “race” was placed at the top. Europeans had long believed they were culturally superior to “barbaric” peoples in Africa and, since 1492, the New World. Emerging ideas about racial difference taught them they were biologically superior as well.

These ideas did not go unchallenged. James Beattie responded directly to claims of white superiority by pointing out that Europeans had started out as savage as non-whites and that many non-European peoples in the Americas, Asia, and Africa had achieved high levels of civilization.

Scholars are only beginning to analyze links between Enlightenment ideas about race and its notions of equality, progress, and reason. There are clear parallels, though, between the use of science to propagate racial hierarchies and its use to defend social inequalities between men and women. As Rousseau used women’s “natural” passivity to argue for their passive role in society, so others used non-European “natural” inferiority to defend slavery and colonial domination. The new powers of science and reason were thus marshaled to imbue traditional stereotypes with the force of natural law.’”

At what percentage of African ancestry are you allowed to call yourself "black?"

Is someone at 25% who does not look black, less black than someone at 10% who has the physical features and appearance of an African?

Who makes that call?

The Native American Nations have wrestled with % and still do. Some would say 1/8, as in G-Grand parents, others think the line should be "cleaner", like 50%..

But,, like the posers,, you need to ask,

what is to be gained from embracing or denying ones heritage(s)??

In this case I think it's all mental, but what do I know??

McKay's thumbnail is an outstanding summary of the issues historians are wrestling with IRT the Enlightenment and racial identity and the subsequent (and ongoing) impact on world history, I do think his time line is off. Winthrop Jordan's seminal White Over Black laid the foundation 1968. IMO, it would be more appropriate to say that there's been an intellectual quickening among academics since the mid-1990s that continues to the present day.

My point here is that before anyone who is not familiar with (or interested in) the links among the Enlightenment, racial identity, and global history dismisses recent scholarship as a "fad," he/she should understand that this is an area of inquiry that academics take very seriously.*

IRT the topic at hand, I believe that Ms. Dolezal's deception and the NAACP's response to it are problematic. The core of the NAACP's mission is working within the American political and legal system to achieve its objectives. IMO, by condoning Ms. Dolezal's behavior, the NAACP is thumbing its nose at its mission.

IRT to Ms. Dolezal herself, regardless of her motivation, by posing as someone she's is not, she has betrayed at a fundamental level those who may have put their trust in her because of her purported identity.

My $0.02.

Yup sure is for folks like Bruce Jenner, Elizabeth Warren, Michael Jackson and Rachel Dolezal. This is 'Merica, not only do we have an identity crisis, we encourage it. As Billy said welcome to the freak show.

I'm a green eyed white guy, hard to lie about my "identity". Only 2% of the world's population has green eyes and we all come from the same geographic area.

BTW, Jeff- green eyes also. Where the Fxxk are we from? Mother was English/Irish, Dad was English ancestry. Are we Viking spawn via some insignificant raid during the Dark Ages?

IMO, I do believe there can be a biological basis for someone being born wired wrong where they feel they are the opposite sex and in the wrong body.

How can that be? Darwin said that Nature would select against such a thing. But, Nature can not select against indoctrination.
