Students at UC Irvine vote to ban American flag
By Todd Starnes
Published March 07, 2015
Students at the University of California, Irvine have voted to make their school a more “culturally inclusive” place by banning the American flag.
The Associated Students of University of California (ASUCI) passed a resolution March 3 that would remove the Stars & Stripes along with every other flag from the lobby of a complex housing the offices of the student government.
“Designing a culturally inclusive space aims to remove barriers that create undue effort and separation by planning and designing spaces that enable everyone to participate equally and confidentially,” read the resolution authored by Matthew Guevara.
The resolution passed 6-4. Two people abstained. Let me break down the vote for you -- six un-American students, four patriots and two individuals who could have a career in House Republican leadership.
Guevara’s resolution, which was in dire need of an edit, rambled on about “paradigms of conformity” and “homogenized standards” and blah, blah, blah.
It sounds like Mr. Guevara could have a future career in community organizing or the Democratic party.
“The American flag has been flown in instances of colonialism and imperialism,” he bemoaned. “Flags not only serve as symbols of patriotism or weapons for nationalism, but also construct cultural mythologies and narratives that in turn charge nationalistic sentiments.”
I know, folks. I know it’s California. But this is beyond bizarre even for the yoga and granola crowd.
I reached out to the university for a comment and a very nice spokesperson (who seemed anxious for the weekend) assured me the university did not endorse the resolution. She also told me the executive board of the student government association is going to meet this weekend and discuss the possibility of a veto.
Reza Zomorrodian, the ASUCI president and a young patriot, told me he was very upset over the student government’s actions and will push for a veto.
“It’s an attack on American values,” he said. “A lot of people want to come to the United States for a reason – it’s because of the freedoms we have.”
Zomorrodian told me the legislation was the result of a longstanding feud over the display of the American flag. He said unknown perpetrators kept taking down the flag and he would put it back up. The flag is currently folded and being protected in a vice president’s office.
“I’m really disappointed in our legislative council right now,” he said. “I’m firmly against what they did. I think it was a horrible idea.”
Zomorrodian said he wants the American public to know that UC Irvine is a patriotic campus.
“Only six people voted for this,” he said. “We have 22,000 undergrads here. Six people made this decision. The UC Irvine has made huge contributions to bettering this country. This is an elected body that made a decision for the whole and will suffer the consequences of making that decision.”
Mr. Zomorrodian sounds like a very nice young man who understands what the American flag represents --- and I hope he musters the votes necessary to rehoist the Stars & Stripes.
As for the handful of un-American rabble rousers who’ve brought shame upon the campus of UC Irvine – I would offer these gentle words:
If you have a problem with the flag and what that flag stands for and the brave men and women who died for that flag – then you are more than welcome to pack your bags and haul your ungrateful buttocks across the border.
And one final thought about the vandals who keep taking down the flag in the dark of night. I wonder if Mr. Zomorrodian has considered asking the university’s ROTC program for help. I suspect a handful of young soldiers might be able to nip that problem in the bud.

California Student Group Vetoes Ban of Flag From Lobby
A panel at the University of California, Irvine on Saturday vetoed a student council vote to ban display of the American flag — or any other national flag — from its lobby, bringing a quick end to a prohibition that lasted just two days and won the school broad negative attention.
The UC Irvine executive cabinet voted 4-1 in a private meeting to overturn the ban that was narrowly passed by the campus's Associated Students two days earlier.
"We see the flag as transcending policy and politics, it represents American values," Reza Zomorrodian, council president and head of the executive cabinet, said after the veto, according to the Orange County Register.
The student council approved the resolution on a 6-4 vote Thursday, with two abstentions.
The resolution authored by student Matthew Guevara of the university's social ecology school lists 25 reasons for the ban, saying that the American flag has been flown in times of "colonialism and imperialism" and could symbolize American "exceptionalism and superiority." The resolution says "freedom of speech, in a space that aims to be as inclusive as possible, can be interpreted as hate speech."
The American flag had hung on a wall in the student government suite. A few weeks ago, someone removed the flag and put it on the desk of Zomorrodian, with an anonymous note saying it shouldn't be in the lobby.
The executive members decided to put up the flag again. Then the resolution was brought to the council.
Word of the ban spread quickly on Friday — including to the state Capitol in Sacramento.
On Friday, state Sen. Janet Nguyen, R-Santa Ana, said she and other legislators may introduce a state constitutional amendment to prohibit "state-funded universities and college campuses from banning the United States flag."
I still think it wouldn't be bad if the people responsible for the ban got behind in their breathing. No love lost here for them ....

I would've ordered thousands of "AMERICAN" flag stickers, (the type you have to scrape off with a razor blade) and went on a rampage.;):p
Typical stupid California student. Want everything given to them without having to work for it.
In the old days I would have said their attitude might change when they left school and had to work for a living. Now they will get Medical/medicaid, food stamps, disability for "stress", and section 8 housing. No reason to change crazy ideology.
I do not agree that the uninformed POVs of six undergraduates is a large enough sample size to make broader conclusions about the University of California system.

Someone was ignorant enough to put them in a position of responsibility where they could make that call ... that's enough for me to indict the system ... and that's my $ .02.

Concur. That and the two abstentions will make wonderful additions to the stable of committed Kalifornia Republicans.

They were elected to head the student govt and voted on an initiative put forth by one of the elected board members - whether or not they had the authority to do so is in question (and doubtful from what I've read).
I'dl wait to see how it ends before committing to jumping through blazing hoops.

Richard, I think we're quibbling about semantics: 'put them' or 'elected' amount to the same thing, i.e. the student body 'put them' or 'elected' them to the position they held where they could broach such a subject for consideration .... legalities aside, the 'communists' true colors came out and created this ruckus.

I like the idea of making them infamous. If they achieve enough notoriety perhaps they'll have difficulty pursuing a career here and move to some communist country that will embrace their concept of patriotism ....

UCI student Matthew Guevara, who sits on the Student Association board, authored the resolution (R50-70) to ban the U.S. flag from the association’s lobby wall. The resolution passed narrowly on Thursday in a 6-4 vote in favor, with two abstentions, but was overturned and vetoed on Saturday during a private meeting held by the Associated Student’s Executive Cabinet by a 4-1 vote.
"We are not graduating students who leave school as eager idealists who want to take on the challenges facing their generation. Rather, students are leaving schools as ideologues with a profound lack of critical thinking skills and a dislike of this country. These students didn't learn enough in school. They should demand their money back"

I find it interesting, though not surprising, that she is an active member/agitator for MECHa (Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán). MECHa is a radical, Marxist, anti-Semitic, Chicano organization actively engaged in subverting our immigration laws in order to effect the reconquista.
...bettering society or battering society?
Demanding that the symbol of the very freedom that allows her to pursue her personal goals doesn't seem like an awesome way to "better" society. Doing it as a member of an arguably anti-American organization also seems more like bAttering American society than bEttering it.
Cheers to her for chasing her goals; jeers to her for behaving as though "we" owe her something...
Just my opinion, I've been wrong before.

Obama thinks he is bettering American society. Maybe in his vision, society is better. But, I believe his vision is profoundly blurred. He is looking down through the fog of a failed ideaology from an ivory tower using of a $10.00 pair of binoculars
I'd be interested to see whether or not her commitment has changed in 5-10 years - and if so, why; if not, why not.

I also found it interesting, not so much in her labors to better herself ... that is the grist of the human condition, i.e. to make lemonade out of lemons, but rather the social fabric that provided her the means to overcome some of the travails of her disability -- a social fabric that is noted for its prolificacy in democratic, capitalistic societies intent on providing for the less fortunate. ... and how do those societies exist -- through the glue of patriotism that distills ideals and proffers them to the rest of the world.
Just my $ .02.

If she is a "Back to Aztlan" follower, She will never be happy as long as the gabachos are in charge. She should be kissing America's collective ass in gratitude for being born here. If she was born in Asia or the Middle East, she would be locked away in a closet for bringing shame upon her family...
