I can appreciate the aesthetics of such a device but it would take a lot of experimenting to get something like that to run effectively. If you've got time on your hands, go for it. Not a very efficient device either.

The T-500 supposedly takes a lot of the guess work out of distilling. Its arguably the most efficient unit on the market and it doesn't cost too much. It'll pump out ~3.5L of 94 percent in about 6 hours or so.
Remember, it's illegal to operate without the appropriate paperwork from the revenuers. But I'm sure you already knew that.

That pot still is certainly pretty. One of the original types of stills, it is/was commonly used for whiskey, brandy, and rum. +1 to what Bettendorf said: It is inefficient and an art to run, but very simple, making it good for the hobbyist or those not having access to modern comforts ;)

That's a fractionating still - the way to go, if you're going to make the effort. It can be very precisely controlled and is much more efficient, not only in running, but in maximizing output. If you're wanting to get into the clear liquors (vodka, gin, etc), this is the type of still for you.
